Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: Gouverneur Morris

Nicole Russo|Apr 29, 2020
Gouverneur Morris in September 2019
Barbara D. Livingston Gouverneur Morris, by Constitution, is from the same female family as champion 2-year-old Midshipman.

Gouverneur Morris

Constitution – Addison Run, by Unbridled’s Song

Bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall, Carrie Brogden, Craig Brogden, and James F. Miller ($200,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Phoenix Thoroughbreds; $600,000 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream juvenile purchase by Team Valor International)

Both the white-hot young sire Constitution and the stakes-placed young broodmare Addison Run have gotten their respective breeding careers off to strong starts. Together they have produced Grade 1-placed Gouverneur Morris, who is bred on a cross that has proven productive.

Constitution, a multiple Grade 1 winner by perennial leading sire Tapit, is represented by five graded stakes winners from his first crop to date. That includes another prominent Kentucky Derby hopeful in multiple Grade 1 winner Tiz the Law, winner of the Florida Derby.

Maryland-bred Addison Run scored her two career wins going six furlongs at Laurel, but was third in the Geisha Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Pimlico. Her first two foals are both graded stakes performers, as Gouverneur Morris was preceded by Final Jeopardy, by Street Sense. That colt finished second to Code of Honor in last year’s Grade 3 Dwyer going a one-turn mile at Belmont. He later finished third in both the Grade 3 Canadian Derby and British Columbia Derby, at 1 1/4 miles and 1 1/8 miles, respectively, and third in the Grade 3 BC Premier’s Handicap at 1 3/8 miles. He also is a minor stakes winner at 1 1/16 miles at Hastings.

Addison Run’s granddam, Grade 2 winner Fleet Lady, produced Eclipse Award champion juvenile Midshipman, by Unbridled’s Song, and Grade 2 winner Fast Cookie. The latter is the dam of classic-placed multiple Grade 1 winner Frosted, by Tapit. Fast Cookie also produced Grade 3 winner Indulgent, by another A.P. Indy-line stallion, Bernardini.

The late Unbridled’s Song is closing in on 200 stakes winners as a broodmare sire, with champions in that regard including dual Eclipse winner Unique Bella, by Tapit.
