Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3: Field closes at 4-1

Marty McGee|Mar 11, 2018
Justify in allowance 03.11.18
Emily Shields Justify went from 10-1 to 6-1 in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager after his allowance victory Sunday.

The mutuel field again was a lukewarm favorite when Pool 3 of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern, while the field also was the slight choice in the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager, which closed 30 minutes later.

The field, the 24th or “all others” option, closed at 4-1 in Derby Pool 3, while Justify was pounded down from 10-1 to 6-1 after winning his second start Sunday in a Santa Anita allowance to become the lowest individually priced horse. Then came Bolt d’Oro (7-1) McKinzie (9-1), Good Magic (11-1), Audible (13-1), and Solomini (17-1).

Combined handle (win and exacta) on Pool 3 was $394,762, up nearly 6 percent over the corresponding pool last year, when $373,354 was bet.

The field closed as the 6-5 favorite in Pool 1, which was held Nov. 23-26 in tandem with the Derby Sires Future Wager, and as the 5-2 favorite for Pool 2, which ran Feb. 9-11. The fourth and final Derby pool will be held April 6-8.

Kentucky Oaks Future Wager field closes at 5-1

In the Oaks pool, the field closed at 5-1, followed by Midnight Bisou (6-1), Monomoy Girl (6-1), Dream Tree (7-1), Caledonia Road (12-1), Midnight Disguise (13-1), and Paved (13-1). The lowest $2 exacta will-pay is Dream Tree over Monomoy Girl (8-14), worth $68.

Combined handle of $70,993 was down 29 percent from last year, when $100,335 was bet.

The largest handle since Oaks futures were first offered in 2003 was $126,039, set in 2013.

Coinciding with Derby Pool 3 and the Oaks pool was a futures double linking the Oaks and Derby, offered for the first time since Churchill Downs began its parimutuel futures in 1999. Handle was $60,822, with the lowest combinations being Dream Tree (8) and Midnight Bisou (12) in the Oaks with Bolt d’Oro (3) in the Derby, each worth $27 for the $1 minimum. The field/field combination is worth $31 for $1.

Last year, the field closed as the 5-1 favorite in Derby Pool 3 over McCraken (6-1), while the eventual Derby winner, Always Dreaming, was 42-1. Unique Bella was the even-money favorite in the Oaks pool last year but did not make the race. The eventual Oaks winner, Abel Tasman, was 23-1 in the futures.

In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse counts toward the winning combination.

The 144th Oaks and Derby will be run May 4 and 5.
