Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Mohaymen favored at 7-2 in Pool 3
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Mohaymen closed as the favorite in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and Songbird was the heaviest favorite in the 14-year history of the Kentucky Oaks Future Wager when pools closed Sunday following the customary three-day run.
Mohaymen closed as the 7-2 choice in Derby Pool 3, with the mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, next at 5-1. Nyquist was next at 7-1, and all others were double-digit odds or higher, starting with Mor Spirit (12-1), Suddenbreakingnews (14-1), and Shagaf (14-1). The lowest $2 exacta will-pay is Mohaymen over the field (13-24), worth $59.60.
Songbird closed at 3-5 and will pay $3.40 if she wins the Oaks as the first-ever separately-listed interest to close at odds-on since Churchill Downs began offering Oaks futures in 2003.
Songbird was followed by Cathryn Sophia at 5-1, and all others were double digits or higher, led by the field (12-1) and Rachel’s Valentina (13-1). The $2 exacta of Songbird over Cathryn Sophia (18-3) is worth a mere $12.20.
Combined handle on both wagers were down from comparable pools last year.
For Derby Pool 3, the win pool was $220,331 and the exacta pool was $107,777, for a combined $328,108, down 22.3 percent from 2015, when the total was $422,330.
For the Oaks, which is offered just once a year, the win pool was $71,080 and the exacta pool was $32,922, for a combined $104,002, down 10 percent from 2015, when the total was $115,615.
Both pools opened Friday at noon Eastern and ran through Sunday evening.
The field was favored in Derby Pool 1, which ran Nov. 26-29, and in Pool 2 (Feb. 12-14). The fourth and final pool is set for April 1-3.
Results are predicated on the May 6 Oaks and May 7 Derby.
