Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Field favored at 6-5 as Pool 1 closes
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field, the 24th or "all others" option, closed as usual as a decisive favorite in Pool 1 of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which closed Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern after a four-day wagering window.
With $177,103 in the win pool, the field closed at 6-5 and was followed by Bolt d'Oro (7-1), Good Magic (11-1), McKinzie (12-1), and Montauk (17-1). Another $73,156 was bet in exactas, making for a combined handle of $250,259. The lowest $2 exacta will-pay combination of Bolt d’Oro over the field (2-24) is worth $40.80.
This is the 20th year Churchill Downs has offered parimutuel futures, and the field has closed as the favorite in Pool 1 every time.
Pool 1 coincided with wagering into the Derby Sires wager, which was offered for the third year. With $27,731 in the win pool and $15,222 in exactas, the field closed as the slimmest of favorites over Medaglia d'Oro, with both at 5-1 (and just $2 in win handle separating them, $3,284 to $3,282). They were followed by Curlin (6-1), Tapit (8-1), and Street Sense (11-1). The lowest $2 exacta will pay is Medaglia d’Oro over Curlin (10-4), worth $42.40.
Pool 2 is set for Feb. 9-11, Pool 3 for March 9-11, and Pool 4 for April 6-8. The Kentucky Oaks future wager will coincide with Pool 3.

Last November, combined handle was $221,801 on Pool 1 and another $44,150 on the Sires futures. The eventual Derby winner, Always Dreaming, was still a maiden at that point and was part of the Pool 1 mutuel field, which closed as the 6-5 favorite. Aggregate handle for all four pools toward the 2017 Derby was $1,409,856.
The record for handle in a single pool is $631,304, set in 2012, while the record for aggregate handle in a single year was $1,665,990 in 2005.
In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination.
The 144th Derby will be run May 5.
