Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Field favored at 4-1
The mutuel field closed Sunday as a lukewarm favorite in Pool 3 of the 2015 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, with the Bob Baffert duo of American Pharoah and Dortmund the heaviest-backed individual interests.
When closing Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern, the field, the 24th or “all others” option, was 4-1, followed by American Pharoah (8-1), Dortmund (9-1), Carpe Diem (10-1), Far From Over (13-1), Khozan (13-1), Texas Red (14-1), and Upstart (14-1).
Combined handle for Pool 3, which had a three-day run with a Friday opening, was $422,330, with $300,403 bet to win and $121,927 in exactas. That amounts to an increase of 26 percent over combined handle for Pool 3 last year ($334,326).
The lowest exacta will-pay combination is Dortmund over the field (6-24), worth $91.80 for $2. In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination.
Wagering was suspended by Churchill Downs before wagering opened Sunday on The Great War, who was declared from Derby consideration after finishing last of 10 in the John Battaglia on Saturday night at Turfway Park.
Pool 1 was held Nov. 28-30 and Pool 2 from Feb. 6-8, with the field closing as the favorite in those. A fourth and final pool is set for March 27-29.
Aggregate handle for the first three pools stands at $1,105,502. Since Churchill first offered parimutuel futures in 1999, the all-time record for handle in one year is $1,665,990, set in 2005.
Kentucky Oaks futures also were offered by Churchill this weekend, with the pool closing 30 minutes after Derby Pool 3. The field also was a lukewarm favorite at 7-2, followed by It’s a Chatterbox (6-1), Take Charge Brandi (7-1), Condo Commando (7-1), Puca (11-1), Birdatthewire (12-1), and Angela Renee (22-1).
Combined handle was $115,615, with $79,445 bet to win and $36,170 in exactas. The handle was improved over the $81,234 bet in 2014, when many customers were shut out because of an inadvertent early closing. The highest pool since Oaks futures were first offered in 2003 was $126,039, set in 2013.
The lowest $2 exacta will-pay is I’m a Chatterbox over the field (11-24), worth $52.80.
