Kenneally looks to double up in Sanford with By Your Side

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Three years ago, Bitumen won his debut at Churchill Downs and came back to win his next start in the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga.
Eddie Kenneally, trainer of Bitumen, will hope for history to repeat itself Saturday when he sends out By Your Side in the $150,000 Sanford Stakes for 2-year-olds at six furlongs.
Like Bitumen, By Your Side won his debut, beating even-money favorite Basin by a nose at Churchill Downs. By Your Side will make his second start against just four opponents in the Sanford.
By Your Side, a son of Constitution owned by Anderson Stables, will have Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons, replacing Corey Lanerie, who was aboard for the debut score.
The others entered are Cucina, a second-out winner at Belmont, Memorable, Raging Whiskey, and Tomato Bill.

Demarchelier retired
Demarchelier, who sustained a condylar fracture in his right foreleg during the Grade 1 Belmont Derby last Saturday, had surgery Sunday but has been retired from racing, trainer Chad Brown said Wednesday.
Brown said John Pigott, a surgeon at the Ruffian Clinic across the street from Belmont Park, “did a fabulous job stabilizing and repairing the injury.
“I saw a video of him walking inside the clinic; it was good to see,” Brown added. “We’re looking to stand him at stud next year, but we want to make sure he’s 100 percent healthy before we start looking at stud deals.”
Demarchelier, a son of Dubawi purchased at the Tattersalls auction in Europe as a yearling by Peter Brant, went 3 for 4, with a victory in the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge Stakes. He earned $188,520.
