Kelsey's Cross key horse in quest for seven-figure Rainbow 6 payout

Kelsey’s Cross had more than one excuse for her seventh-place finish as the favorite in the $60,000 In the Breeze in her last start. She could make amends when she runs in the $60,000 Dayatthespa, which headlines the 11-race card Sunday at Gulfstream Park.

The 1 1/16-mile race on turf for fillies and mares drew eight horses goes as race 10. It is the fifth leg in the Rainbow 6, which has a mandatory payout. Going into Friday’s card, the Rainbow 6 carryover was $1,004,594. Officials at Gulfstream are expecting the pool to end up as high as $4 million.

The Rainbow 6 begins in race 6 with a maiden special weight race for fillies and mares that drew nine horses for turf. Puppet Master could be singled if the race is moved to the main track.

On turf, Pseudonym and She’s Just Quality might be all that are needed.

Pseudonym, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., had a rough go early when she finished third behind runner-up She’s Just Quality in a one-mile race maiden special weight race on turf June 28. Both are lightly raced and should have considerable upside.

Race 7, a $10,000 claimer for nonwinners of two, is more competitive.

Outamine is a bit of a stab, but he romped in his debut at Fair Grounds last year and will appreciate the easier company after not being able to keep up in a first-level allowance race with a $25,000 claiming option in his first start this year. Trained by Louie Roussel, he drew the rail and may be tough to reel in if he breaks alertly.

Flawless Moon should be rolling late and could pick up the pieces if Captain Duke and Outamine get carried away early. Captain Duke has yet to run a bad race in three starts since being claimed by trainer Jorge Delgado. Harper Go Lucky also should be heard from late with leading rider Edgard Zayas aboard.

Catharsis is a possible single in the eighth race, a first-level allowance race for Florida-bred fillies and mares that drew a full field of 12 horses. The five-furlong race on turf has a $20,000 claiming option.

Trained by Armando De La Cerda, Catharsis is coming off a nose loss in the slop in a first-level allowance race with a $25,000 claiming option that was washed off the turf May 17.

She won her two previous races on turf, and the seven-time winner knows where the wire is. She has speed but can stalk and should get a nice trip from a forward position with Zayas riding.

Another possibility is Heir Ball, who had a rough trip as the favorite in a first-level allowance race with a $12,000 claiming option for Florida-breds going five furlongs on turf July 17. She won an open $25,000 optional claimer in her first start after being claimed by trainer Carlos David on June 10.

All About Stella is a bit light on class, but she is coming off a blowout win over easier in her second start since being sent to trainer Ralph Nicks and may not have reached her peak.

It is hard to take a firm stand on any of the 10 horses entered in Race 9. Worth Avenue, Cape Trios, and Nowitna River make the most sense in the $10,000 claimer for fillies and mares going 6 1/2 furlongs. However, cases could be made for Patient Digna, Sweetly Maid, and Note to Selfie. Mancora, who is coming off a sharp win at Tampa Bay but hasn’t run well in three starts at Gulfstream, also could be considered.

If Kelsey’s Cross runs as well as she did in winning the $100,000 Ginger Punch on June 6, she will be tough to beat in the Dayatthespa, race 10. The Patrick Biancone-trained 4-year-old daughter of Anthony’s Cross may have bounced when she finished seventh as the 9-5 favorite in the $60,000 In the Breeze on July 5. It did not help that she had a wide trip in the one-mile race on turf.

Great Sister Diane is trending in the right direction for trainer Rohan Crichton and is capable of winning if she finds the form that saw her win the $75,000 Monroe with an 89 Beyer Speed Figure as a 3-year-old last year.

Lovely Luvy also is heading in a positive direction for Joseph.

Drinks On Me, third behind Lovely Luvy, looks like the one to beat in the nightcap. However, she is no cinch in the $16,000 starter race with a $20,000 optional claiming price for fillies and mares going a mile on turf.

Augusta Moon could make amends following a rough trip as the favorite in a $30,000 conditioned claimer on June 27.

Passion Plus finished with determination after getting stuck behind a slow pace and having nowhere to go most of the way in a first-level allowance race with a $16,00 claiming option for Florida-breds in her last start.

Trainer Carlos David has two good shots with Get Rewarded and Oblio’s Wish.
