Kela retired with injury

Kela, the winner of two major sprint stakes at Del Mar last summer, has been retired because of an ankle injury, according to his trainer, Mike Mitchell.

Plans for a stud career have not been finalized.

Owned by Jay Manoogian, , 6, won 8 of 26 starts and $1,022,527. He had his best season in 2004, winning 3 of 9 starts and $710,212. Kela won the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Breeders' Cup and Pat O'Brien Breeders' Cup handicaps at Del Mar and was second in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

Kela made one start this year, finishing third as the even-money favorite in the Grade 3 Deputy Minster Handicap at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 5.
