LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The month of April marked the start of 2-year-old racing in North America, and the first starters for the freshman sire class. As the calendar turns to May, Mo Town has stepped forward as the early leader of this class, and has the ability to make a statement this week at Churchill Downs. Mo Town, who stands at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud, has, like a handful of other new stallions, been represented by one winner thus far – that being Mr. Gordy, who won on debut April 13 at Keeneland. But he has had four other starters, with three of those hitting the board, helping him to amass earnings of $80,830 thus far to lead the way. Baytown Get It On and Mo’s Treasure were second and third, respectively, in the same Keeneland maiden on April 8, while Galactic Tide was third on debut at Laurel Park. Mo Town has two runners this week at Churchill Downs, with Mr. Gordy stepping up for the $200,000 Kentucky Juvenile on Thursday, and Mo’s Treasure running in a maiden special weight the day before. John Hancock trains Mr. Gordy for Randle Glosson, and also co-owned and saddled Mo’s Treasure on debut before privately selling him to Wayne Lukas on behalf of clients. :: DRF has you covered! They love to train. They are blue-collar horses. They’re very agile, they’re quick if you want them to be, they’ll rate if you want them to. I wish I had 10 in my barn.” Mo Town is a son of juvenile champion Uncle Mo, who quickly emerged as a sire of sires with the likes of Nyquist and Laoban – represented in the Oaks and Derby, respectively, this week. Mo Town showed the 2-year-old ability that is typical of this line by winning the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes on dirt. He later won the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby on turf as a 3-year-old. “What Uncle Mo has achieved in a very short space of time as a sire of sires is remarkable – every single one of his sons to have had a runner has had a winner, including two who have sired Grade 1 winners,” Ashford’s Robyn Murray said. Mo Town’s “versatility is a great representation of what Uncle Mo can get you.” :: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales Behind Mo Town on the early earnings list is Oscar Performance, who also showed 2-year-old ability by winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, then going on to be a Grade 1 winner at 3 and 4, as well. The Mill Ridge Farm stallion has sired three starters to date, with the aptly named Andthewinneris scoring on debut on the Keeneland turf. McCraken’s first starter, Crackalacking, won at Keeneland to put the Airdrie Stud resident third on the earnings list. Smokem, standing at Lovacres Ranch in California, does not yet have a winner, but has had three starters to help himself into the top group by earnings. Rounding out the top five is Spendthrift Farm’s commercially red-hot Bolt d’Oro, who has two starters, both on the board. Pop d’Oro won a trial race at Turf Paradise and Sergeant Countzler was third at Keeneland.
