Keeneland: Turbulent Descent romps as heavy favorite in Beaumont

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Turbulent Descent drew off in the final furlong to run her career record to 5 for 6 with an easy score as an odds-on favorite Sunday in the Grade 2, $150,000 Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland.

With David Flores keeping her clear of traffic throughout the Beard Course journey of seven furlongs and 184 feet, Turbulent Descent took command from Gran Lioness after turning for home before prevailing by five lengths over Honey Chile. Coax Liberty was another half-length back in third, while Tell a Kelly, the 7-2 second choice, was never a serious threat when finishing fifth of six 3-year-old fillies in her seasonal debut.

Turbulent Descent, based in Southern California with trainer Mike Pupye, finished in 1:26.12 over Polytrack and returned $3.20 to win. A Florida-bred daughter of Congrats, Turbulent Descent is owned by Blinkers On Racing, William Strauss, and Robert Butler. She earned $90,000 to lift her bankroll to $618,350.

Turbulent Descent has won four stakes, including two Grade 1’s and now a Grade 2. Puype has been judicious in mapping out a campaign for the filly, saying he is dubious about her ability to get the 1 1/8-mile distance in a race as tough as the Kentucky Oaks.

“She could be even better as a sprinter or miler,” said Puype.

Tell a Kelly, winner of the Grade 1 Darley Debutante last summer at Del Mar, was making her first start under the care of trainer Chad Brown.

Every Beaumont starter wore a camouflage-colored saddle towel as a fitting tribute on Military Appreciation Day.

After two dark days, racing at Keeneland resumes Wednesday.
