Keeneland September: Horses to watch as Book 5 begins Wednesday
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The following are horses to watch in Wednesday's session of the Keeneland September yearling sale, the Book 5 opener as the auction moves into its final stretch. Horses were selected largely based on their pedigrees, and these selections factor in catalog updates and sale outs through Monday.
Hip 2837, filly by Maximus Mischief - Sarah Her Highness, by Milwaukee Brew. Consigned by Clarkland Farm.
This is the first crop for Maximus Mischief, a son of leading sire and emerging sire of sires Into Mischief. Stakes-placed Sarah Her Highness is a granddaughter of Broodmare of the Year Leslie's Lady - dam of Into Mischief himself, along with Hall of Famer Beholder and Breeders' Cup winner Mendelssohn.
Hip 2874, filly by Good Magic - Speedy Soul, by Souper Speedy. Consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales, agent.
Champion Good Magic is an emerging son of Curlin, with recent graded stakes winner Curly Jack in his first crop. Speedy Soul is a Canadian classic winner from the family of Grade 1 winner and champion Sky Classic, Grade 1 winner Always a Classic, and champions Regal Classic, Grey Classic, and Classy 'n Smart, the latter the prolific dam of Dance Smartly and Smart Strike.
Hip 2978, filly by Kantharos - Cascading, by A.P. Indy. Consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales, agent.
Stakes winner Cascading is a granddaughter of blue ben Better Than Honour, dams of classic winners Rags to Riches and Jazil, among others. Better Than Honour, in turn, is out of Kentucky Oaks winner and prominent producer Blush With Pride.
Hip 2990, filly by Bernardini - Cleopatra's Charm, by Pioneerof the Nile. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales, agent.
The late Bernardini has not only been a successful sire, but a smashing broodmare sire, and there will be few opportunities left to acquire his daughters; many were outs early in the sale, their breeders choosing to hang on to them. This filly's dam is out of Grade 1 winner and stakes producer Careless Jewel, from the family of Grade 1 winner Subordination.
Hip 3071, colt by Mendelssohn - Guide, by Pulpit. Consigned by Eaton Sales, agent.
This colt is a half-brother to stakes winner The Great War, and this is the extremely productive family of Grade 1 winners Bolt d'Oro, Global Campaign, and Zensational.
Hip 3169, colt by Tapit - Nashoba's Gold, by Smart Strike. Consigned by Gainesway, agent.
There are few opportunities to acquire yearlings by proven leading sires such as Tapit as this sale continues on. Multiple graded stakes winner Nashoba's Gold is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Nashoba's Key.
Hip 3177, colt by Preservationist - No Such Word, by Canadian Frontier.
This colt by a first-crop sire is out of a Grade 1 winner.
