Keeneland September: Horse to watch during Thursday's final Book 2 session
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Keeneland September yearling sale concludes what has been a robust first week with its second and final Book 2 session Thursday. The sale takes its traditional dark day Friday before continuing with daily sessions through Sept. 24.
Here are some of the horses to watch in the Thursday session, largely based on their pages and the market trends seen thus far. The selections reflect catalog updates and sale outs through Wednesday morning.
Hip No. 869, colt by Medaglia d’Oro – Valadorna, by Curlin. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales, agent for Stonestreet Farm.
This is the second foal out of Valadorna, who was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and went on to be a graded stakes winner as an older runner. She is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Complexity.
Hip No. 930, filly by Justify – Brava Anna, by War Front. Consigned by Ballysax Bloodstock, agent.
Group 1-winning juvenile Brava Anna’s first starter is a winner. The young broodmare is from a prolific European family; she is a full sister to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Hit It a Bomb, among other relations.
Hip No. 957, filly by Curlin – Comedy, by Theatrical. Consigned by Indian Creek, agent for Stonestreet Farm.
Comedy is the dam of six winners from eight starters, including Grade 1 winner Taris and stakes winners Theatre Star and Stoweshoe. Taris is the dam of Grade 3 winner King Fury, by Curlin, who is enjoying a stellar year in the commercial arena.
Hip No. 967, colt by Uncle Mo – Daisy Mason, by Orientate. Consigned by Airdrie Stud, agent.
Uncle Mo recorded the second classic winner of his young career with Belmont Stakes winner Mo Donegal this year. This colt’s second dam is blue hen Leslie’s Lady, dam of Hall of Fame racemare Beholder, Grade 1 winner and leading sire Into Mischief, and the globe-trotting Mendelssohn. Daisy Mason is doing her best to live up to that production record; the unraced mare is the dam of four winners from five starters, including Grade 3-placed stakes winner Harry’s Holiday and Grade 3-placed Remedy.
Hip No. 971, filly by More Than Ready – Dayatthespa, by City Zip. Consigned by Warrendale Sales, agent for Stonestreet Farm.
This will be one of the final crops by More Than Ready, who died in late August. Eclipse Award champion turf mare Dayatthespa won three Grade 1s, including the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf; her first foal is Group 3-placed Tenbury Wells.
Hip No. 1099, filly by American Freedom – Memories Prevail, by Creative Cause. Consigned by Airdrie Stud.
This is a half-sister to Zandon, winner of the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes this spring; since then, he has finished third in the Kentucky Derby, second in the Jim Dandy, and third in the Travers Stakes. This is an active family, as Cairo Memories, a half-sister to Memories Prevail, is a graded stakes winner this year.
