Keeneland September: Book 3 horses to watch on Sunday

Nicole Russo|Sep 17, 2022

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The marathon Keeneland September yearling sale, the largest of its kind in North America, reaches its midway point with Sunday’s session, the Book 3 finale. Here are some of the horses to watch in this session, largely based on their pages and the market trends seen thus far. The selections reflect catalog updates and sale outs through Saturday.

Hip 1561, colt by Candy Ride - Private Gift, by Unbridled. Consigned by Mt. Brilliant Farm.

Stakes winner Private Gift is the dam of Grade 2 winner Private Mission, stakes winner Secret Someone, stakes-placed Profetiza, and Gift List, dam of Grade 1 winner Dunbar Road. Private Gift is a half-sister to Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Status and graded stakes winner Alumni Hall.

Hip 1600, filly by Tapiture - Silent Candy, by Candy Ride. Consigned by Blandford Stud, agent for Westwind Farms.

This is a half-sister to Epicenter who, earlier this year, won the Louisiana Derby before finishing second in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. He seized control of the 3-year-old division over the summer by winning the Jim Dandy and Travers stakes. The dam is Grade 3-placed stakes winner Silent Candy.

Hip 1621, filly by Into Mischief - Star Billing, by Dynaformer. Consigned by Mt. Brilliant Farm.

Grade 1 winner Star Billing's first starter is Maschietta, a winning full sister to this yearling.

Hip 1639, filly by American Pharoah - Sweet N Discreet, by Discreet Cat. Consigned by Mt. Brilliant Farm.

This is a full sister to multiple graded stakes winner Sweet Melania. Stakes winner Sweet N Discreet is a full sister to graded stakes winner Discreet Dancer. This is the extended family of the great A.P. Indy, as well as fellow classic winners Summer Squall and Lemon Drop Kid.

Hip 1723, colt by Gun Runner - Be Fair, by Exchange Rate. Consigned by Hidden Brook, agent.

This page got a big update when 2-year-old half-sister And Tell Me Nolies won the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante. Overall, Grade 3 winner Be Fair is the dam of six winners from as many starters. This is the family of Grade 1 winner Macho Again.

Hip 1770, colt by Candy Ride - Crosswinds, by Storm Cat. Consigned by Hinkle Farms.

This colt, a June foal, is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Weep No More and graded stakes winner Current. It is the family of Kentucky Oaks winner Flute. A colt bred on a very similar pattern - by Candy Ride's son Gun Runner, and from another branch of this female family - brought seven figures during Book 2.

Hip 1871, colt by Into Mischief - Kayce Ace, by Tiznow. Consigned by Four Star Sales, agent.

This is a full brother to Grade 3-winning juvenile Comical, who was also multiple Grade 1-placed that season. Stakes-placed Kayce Ace is a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Colonel John and to Mr. Hot Stuff, who was Grade 1-placed on the flat before becoming a Grade 1-winning steeplechaser.
