Keeneland November sale, at midpoint, surpasses 2020's total gross
LEXINGTON, Ky. - A weanling half-sister to Grade 1 winner Juju's Map led Sunday's session at $360,000 as the Keeneland November breeding stock sale reached its midway point with significant gains, having already surpassed its total gross sales from 2020.
Sunday's session marked the finale of Book 3, and the fifth of 10 sessions overall at Keeneland November. To this point, Keeneland reports that 1,120 horses have sold through the ring for gross receipts of $166,206,000. Through five sessions last year, 982 horse had sold for $128,701,000. The gross for the entire 10-session sale last year was $151,017,300.
The cumulative average price sits at $148,398, tracking upward 13 percent from $131,060 at this point last year. The median, a crucial figure, sits at $95,000 compared to $75,000, an improvement of 27 percent.
The overall buyback rate has also improved, tracking at 21 percent compared to 26 percent.
The session-leading filly was purchased in the name of Susan Casner, from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales, as agent. The filly is from the first crop of Audible, a Grade 1-winning son of leading sire and emerging sire of sires Into Mischief.
The filly is out of the Flatter mare Nagambie, dam of two winners from as many starters. The most recent of those is Juju's Map, who, since the Keeneland November catalog was printed, won the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland and finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Nagambie is out of stakes winner Charming N Loveable, making her a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Fault, to Grade 3-placed Betweenhereandcool, and stakes-placed Congenial. Grade 1 winner Bast also appears on the catalog page.
The session's highest-priced broodmare was $300,000 Super Simple, purchased by Woodford Thoroughbreds from the consignment of Warrendale Sales, as agent. The winning Super Saver mare was offered carrying her first foal, from the first crop of Grade 1-winning Volatile.
Super Simple is out of Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Simplify. That Pulpit mare is the dam of four winners from five starters, including stakes winner Simple Surprise and stakes-placed Simply Sovereign. Simple Surprise is the dam of this year's Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes winner, Gunite.
The Keeneland November sale's final five days are comprised of a two-session Book 4 and a three-session Book 5. The sale's final session, on Friday, is highlighted by a selection of horses of racing age, a market segment that has steadily grown in scope and popularity at Keeneland November.
