Keeneland November: Broodmare prospect Stormy's Song tops Book 6

Nicole Russo|Nov 14, 2018

The broodmare prospect Stormy's Song sold for $102,000 to a group supporting one of the season’s incoming stallions to lead the day as the Keeneland November breeding stock sale approaches its finish line.

Wednesday's session, the single-session Book 6, featured 237 horses grossing $2,903,800 for an average of $12,252 and a median of $7,000. Through 10 sessions of the sale, comprising Books 1 through 6, a cumulative total of 2,286 horses have sold for gross receipts of $187,191,400. The first 10 sessions of last year's sale, comprising Books 1 through 5, finished with 2,197 horses sold for $200,620,600.

The cumulative average price for Keeneland November currently sits at $81,886, trending down 10 percent from $91,316 at this point last year. The median, $32,000, is down 20 percent from $40,000. The buyback rate remains unchanged at 24 percent.

Stormy's Song, a winning 4-year-old by Unbridled's Song, was purchased by a group dubbed Army Mule Partnership to lead the session. She is bound for the court of unbeaten but lightly raced Grade 1 winner Army Mule, who will begin his stallion career this coming season at Hill 'n' Dale Farm.

Stormy's Song, consigned as agent by Hidden Brook, is out of the Stormy Atlantic mare Stormy Tak, a half-sister to Japanese stakes winner A Shin Spartan and to stakes winner and producer Melody Lady. Their dam is the multiple Grade 1 winner Lady Tak.

“We’re real familiar with the whole family; we bred Stormy Tak [in partnership],” Hill ‘n’ Dale general manager Jared Burdine said. “She’s going to go to Army Mule for a partnership there. We’re excited about him as a stallion.”

The session's most expensive weanling was a $50,000 filly from the first crop of Breeders' Cup Mile winner Tourist. Stafford Pond Farm purchased her from the consignment of Endeavor Farm, as agent.

The filly is out of the stakes-placed Skip Away mare Blondz Away, dam of six winners from eight starters. Those are led by stakes winner Colonel Samsen and stakes placed Summer Share.

Keeneland November is set to conclude with a pair of Book 7 sessions on Thursday and Friday. For hip-by-hip results from the sale, click here.
