Keeneland November breeding stock sale closes Book 3 with some economic decline
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Keeneland November breeding stock sale moved past its midway point this weekend, closing out the Book 3 portion with some declines in its economic figures.
To this point of the sale - a single-session Book 1 and two sessions each of Books 2 and 3, comprising the first five of nine sessions overall - 1,058 horses have sold for gross receipts of $154,748,000. Last year at this same point 1,041 horses had sold for $182,437,000.
The cumulative average price through five sessions sits at $146,265, down 17 percent from $175,252 at this point last year, fueled by a strong top of the marketplace. The median is down 20 percent, at $80,000 compared to $100,000.
The buyback rate steadied in Books 2 and 3, after it was higher in Book 1. The overall rate currently sits at 27 percent, compared to 25 percent at this point in 2022.
Topping Book 3 overall was Chameleon, a $425,000 broodmare sold in Saturday's first session of the book. She was purchased by Stoneway Farm, from the consignment of Mt. Brilliant Farm, as agent.
Chameleon, a 4-year-old daughter of Candy Ride, sold carrying her first foal, to the cover of multiple Grade 1 winner and successful young sire Practical Joke.
Chameleon is out of the stakes-winning A.P. Indy mare Secret Someone, in turn out of stakes winner Private Gift. That makes Secret Someone a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Private Mission - by Into Mischief, the sire of Practical Joke - and to Gift List, the dam of Grade 1-winning millionaire Dunbar Road. This is the family of Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Status.
