Keeneland notes: Catholic Cowboy back on short rest
Nick Zito doesn’t do this very often, but after Catholic Cowboy failed to fire Wednesday in a 1 1/16-mile allowance, the Hall of Fame trainer entered the 4-year-old colt back for a seven-furlong allowance Sunday.
“He was so fired up after [the Wednesday race] that he got loose from the hot walker and was running through the stable area,” said Zito. “Luckily, we caught him right away, but that told me he barely did any running, so we’re coming right back at them. He’s better than what he showed.”
Schivarelli, a 3-year-old who last raced in the Wood Memorial in April, is among the opposition for Catholic Cowboy in the seventh race Sunday.
Enchanting Lisa impresses connections
Nothing stirs Charlie LoPresti like winning a race with the reigning two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan, but when he sent out Enchanting Lisa to a 3 1/2-length victory in the Wednesday nightcap, the trainer got a big kick out of that, too.
Enchanting Lisa, by War Chant, was produced by Lisa Danielle, which makes the 4-year-old filly a half-sister to Wise Dan (by Wiseman’s Ferry), a 7-year-old gelding, and the retired 8-year-old Successful Dan (by Successful Appeal), an earner of $998,154. All are homebreds owned by Morton Fink.
“That was nice,” said LoPresti. “We’re probably going to point her to the Chilukki. I’d like to keep her going around one turn.”
The Chilukki is a Grade 2 race run Nov. 1 at Churchill.
** Through the first five of 17 days at the fall meet, form has been holding far better than average, at least if winning favorites are a gauge. Through Thursday, favorites had won 20 of 48 races (42 percent). The average field size has been 8.25 horses per race.
** The annual All-Star Jockeys’ No-Limit Texas Hold ’Em Tournament organized by retired jockey Shane Sellers is being held Sunday evening at The Red Mile.
