Keeneland: Lapuma pulls surprise

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Lapuma ($12.40) swept to the lead in midstretch and went on to upset heavily favored Volga in the 11th running of the $112,200 Dowager Stakes.

With Larry Melancon riding for owner Joe Allen and trainer Alton Quanbeck, Lapuma bid for the lead turning for home, then outran San Dare and Volga down the stretch to win the 1 1/2-mile race as the 5-1 second choice. She finished in 2:35.17 over a yielding course.

San Dare, the 8-1 third choice, finished a half-length behind the winner and just a head in front of Volga, the 2-5 favorite in a field of nine. Volga, ridden by Pat Day, had every chance to win after entering contention with a quarter-mile to go.

"She had nothing but racetrack in front of her in the stretch and just didn't get it done," said Day.
