Spot PlayCIRCLE THE WORLD (#4, 2-1): Asked to name some of the better 2-year-olds in a crop that he claims “might be my best yet,” uber-juvey-trainer Wesley Ward specifically listed this colt among the select few. That’s enough for us, period. Likely to be overbet, as usual, but that’s part of the tax you pay in backing Wesley, but perhaps there’ll be value in the horizontal multi-plays. – Marty McGee
Spot PlayExactas, 11-1, 11-6 Shipping in off those terrific races at Gulfstream, there’s little doubt Wild Swava (#11) will come a stout fave for Maker and Leparoux. Still, taking him in some tricks might lead to some profitable ventures, especially when using a couple sleepers such as Give Me Thy Heart (#1), whose last needs to be overlooked, and War of Ages (#6), whose Hou form figures to be underappreciated. – Marty McGee

Vulnerable FavoriteWILD SWAVA (#11, 1-1) draws wide, is best on turf, and her trainer has struggled mightily at the meet; worth taking a shot against her as a heavy favorite in this spot, at least on the win end. -Kenny Peck

Spot PlayDR. ABRAMSON (#3, 6-1) has some very nice works showing for his debut for trainer Ken McPeek, known for winning at decent prices with firsters; using him with fellow firster SMOKIN AFTER FUN (#10, 12-1). -Kenny Peck

Appalachian Stakes by Byron KingRECEPTA makes her first start at 3 after a juvenile season in which she won two of three starts, capped by a victory in the Chelsea Flower Stakes at Belmont in which she won going away by 3 1/4 lengths; she earned an 84 Beyer for that victory, and managed it despite the widest trip of any of the 12 starters in the race; well drawn in post 1 for her return and training quickly on the Palm Meadows lawn leading up to her return. RESISTIVITY got cooked in a speed duel in the Ashland and lost by 25 lengths, but must have come out of the race well for trainer Mark Casse to wheel her back so quickly; dominated a N1X allowance field at Gulfstream when able to control the pace Mar. 15; dangerous if she gets away with soft splits. KITTEN KABOODLE won the Jessamine on this course last year, but subsequently disappointed with an 11th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and a seventh in her seasonal bow in the Florida Oaks; expecting better in her second start of the year. Beyond the three mentioned above, consider ZINZAY, DARING DANCER, and European invaders LACAROLINA and SWEET ACCLAIM for use underneath in the gimmicks.
Spot PlaySWEET ACCLAIM (#4, 8-1): Prefer the longer of the two Euro invaders, as this one adds Lasix and goes first time for Brown today; will play to win at 5-1 minimum and exactas over #1 RECEPTA and the other Euro, #3 LACAROLINA. - Chuck Kuehhas Closer Looks >> |
