Spot PlayFRIVOLOUS (#6, 7-2) Team Oliver (Phil and Vicki) have the occasional legit grass horse come through their barn on occasion, and this Empire Maker sure seems to be one of them. With some serious winter foundation at Payson behind her, she could be sitting on a terrific 4yo season, and no reason to think she won’t be good enough to down this group right off the bench. – Marty McGee

Beaumont Stakes by Marcus HershIf asked to give advice about the Beaumont Stakes, I’d condense it to one word: Spread. Of the eight 3-year-old fillies entered in the Beaumont, I could see six of them winning, and one of the other two, Katie’s Eyes, can’t really be ruled out, either. RICHIE’S PARTY GIRL is 5-2 on the morning line, with co-3-1 shots SWEET WHISKEY and READY TO ACT, but I could see Richie’s Party Girl going lower and Sweet Whiskey drifting higher (Pletcher horses don’t get bet all that much on KEE Poly). Thing is, Sweet Whiskey and RPG have the same front-running style and easily could cancel each other out on the lead, provided the main track isn’t carrying speed, and if looking for something off the pace, give me SPRING AGAIN over Ready to Act. I can’t see Spring Again going off at her 15-1 morning-line price: She’s the only Keeneland Polytrack winner in the race, and Ward-trained horses do get bet at this meet. Still, 8-1 is a reasonable guess, and it might be fair. He maiden win at KEE was above average, and she’s getting blinkers back on now (they were on for the local win) while turning back from routes to a long one-turn race that should really suit her. Saves ground, runs them down with luck. TEA TIME ran a big number on BEL dirt, but – like Richis’s Party Girl’s most recent race – that Beyer figure was an outlier within her whole body of work. She also prefers forward placements, and a horse like Pletcher’s supposed second, CO COLA, is a more appealing option. By Candy Ride out of a Yonaguska mare – sounds like a Beard course pedigree to me.
Spot PlayREADY TO ACT (#3, 3-1): Thinking the rail draw and being inside all the speed will be a very good thing for a filly who’s had some problems once she’s been loose out front. Especially on this calculated turn-back from a turf route, she and Javier should be willing to take some cover before she’s let for her explosive run down the lane. Very, very shrewdly spotted by Chad. – Marty McGee

Spot PlayFILIMBI (#3, 4-1): France-based Juddmonte homebred ships here adding Lasix for stateside debut; gets favorite distance here today and will be a handful in the lane under Rosario. - Chuck Kuehhas
