Spot PlayDYNAMICAL (#8,10-1): Just when you aren’t paying close enough attention, it seems like here comes Merrill Scherer to slip one past you at a price. Well, in this wide-open $32 claiming route, we’re going to give a realllly long look to a gelding who already has a career win over the Kee Poly. Clearly there are no standouts in this one, and with a forward trip from a favorable outside slot and a subtle drop in class, this guy is eligible to pull off one of those patented Merrill tote-busters. – Marty McGee
Live LongshotORE PASS (#5, 8-1) cuts back to preferred sprint after second poor two turn outing in as many attempts; been working well on synthetics prepping for this and jock got some live mounts opening weekend. - Chuck Kuehhas

Maker's 46 Mile by Marty McGeeNow this is what the people came to see: Wise Dan (#3) strutting his stuff. Layoff, schmayoff … Charlie has him ready to roll, just like last year, and it’d qualify as a huge surprise if one of these other older turfers can stop him. That said, the only way to make a little jing is to punch it home in both the horizontals (there’s a $200k late-pick-4 pool guarantee for Friday) and the verticals. Seems you’d have to take a stand against at least one of the three obvious potential upsetters, and I’ll target Za Approval (#1) and his so-so California return to make him vulnerable to the other two, Reload (#5) and Lochte (#6). The play: Wise Dan as the proverbial “free space” in the multi’s, as well as exacta and tri keys of 3 over 5/6.
Spot PlayCold exacta, 3-6: Until further notice, the all-world status of Wise Dan (#3) is beyond reproach, so layoff or no, he’s the proverbial free-space in the end-of-card multi’s (incl. the $200k-guar. pick-4). While we’re at it, let’s cold-punch him over a true up-and-comer who might well be the 2nd-best grass miler on the continent right now, and that’s Lochte (#6), while we also interpret the BC Mile runner-up surprise by Za Approval as an invitation to extract a little value from the verticals. – Marty McGee
