Keeneland: Closer Looks for October 24, 2013

DRF Staff|Oct 23, 2013

Race 2

He's So Fine
This G2 stakes-placed runner leads off a very tough n2l field today; he showed improved early speed in his last turf route and shows a well-spaced work tab; cutting way back in distance should actually help his cause.
Sayler's Creek
Jumps up several rungs on the ladder following the recent claim; he was game to capture the place in that venture and will have to get into the race sooner today in order to have a realistic chance; scheduled to switch to Napravnik who has done well for these connections.
Coded Image
Rushed into a speed duel last month at Presque Isle and understandably faded; will likely have to deal with swifter early fractions here and that may compromise his chances; latest a.m. breeze over the course was modest.
Quittin Time
Finished strong in his August getaway race; needs all the pure speeds in this affair to remain in attendance, and do battle, in order to pick up the pieces; should be flying late if that ideal scenario unfolds.
Saturdayatbernies
Exits a much tougher contest where he did not break smoothly; makes his first attempt at this n2l level and can move up considerably as a result; may be forced to change tactics, however, because of the pace nature of the field.
Ration
Reverts to Hernandez who was aboard for this gelding's only victory (he was also in the irons for the sole attempt over this course which featured a decent middle move); can rebound from a trouble-filled effort over an unfamiliar sloppy surface.
Pure Aristotle
Graduated over a yielding turf course last month and was re-claimed; subsequent works are noteworthy with the one on the morning of 10/15 his best yet; could prove to be the right value play in this event.
Off the Page
He owns a stronger first gear than most of this field and set a decent tempo in his only attempt at this oval; ran into some multiple winners in his Saratoga campaign and should find this crew a lot easier to handle; legitimate exacta chances especially if not challenged in opening stages.
Silver Ward
He has been stuck in this same class a long time yet the last pair of efforts over the green showed improvement; does not appear fast enough to clear Off the Page in the first few strides and that is his main concern; increase his money chances if that key foe happens to scratch. By Jim Kachulis

Race 4

Whatthecatdrugin
OK, so they got a bit to ambitious trying the 12f G2 Ky. Turf Cup Sept. 14; hey, it's not the worst thing in the world to occasionally shoot forthe moon, though let's face it, he was 0 for 3 on turf going in and the 12fs seemed dicey, too; the worst part is that run may have takent something out of him as he then posted a bullet work here, went to MNR but as the favorite set the pace but faltered to be a well-beaten 3rd; good news is you know he likes it here, his speed is intact and he only has to carry 7fs; but you have the right to be a tad suspicious as after a long run of good races he's suddenly popped up with 3 not-to-hot ones.
Occasional View
5th in the G3 Phoenix here wasn't bad at all; heck, he got beat just 3 1/2 lengths by a horse who goes next in the G1 BC Sprint at SA Nov. 2; class drop should surely help and he's got a nice style for 7fs - has the speed to get position and can still punch it in late.
Admiral Perry
Off the board in only prior synthetic try, but that came quite a while ago; been on a steady turf diet the past year and a half and you've seen many a turf horse come here and flourish; form was nice, too, from June to late September and while he was only 6th on turf here Oct. 11 he did have some trouble that day, and notice Rocco Jr. stays for Shug who does NOT risk this guy for a tag.
Xbalanque
Real sharp at AP this spring/summer, then took it to KD when a smart 2nd in a turf sprint stakes Sept. 14; so what happened here Oct. 4?; was that simply one of those days?; possibly, though that company may simply have been too much for him; well, this spot isn't easier; that dull Oct. 4 run was surely the exception to the rule, though it does make you wonder if after a bunch of good races he's now on the downside of his form cycle.
Triple Cross
Toss those 3 turf starts Aug. 25, July 13 and June 1 and you're then left with a bunch of good synthetic track sprints; well, that's the game we're playing today and it's encouraging that while he ran pooorly on turf at WO Aug. 25 he came right back to run well (3rd) in a synthetic track sprint at PID last month so there seem to be no ill effects from that Aug. 25 turf dud; main issue, though, is whether he's good enough to handle some toughies, and he's a horse who hasn't won now in almost 14 months.
Luzianna Man
7th, well behind today's foe Xbalanque (2nd) in a turf sprint stakes at KD Sept. 14; but this guy has now finished off the board in 2 turf starts so that apparently isn't his game; back to synthetic today and he's won sprinting on this track; worked twice since and off those, with 2 outings under his belt and a return to synthetic maybe he's ready to move forward....maybe.
Chief Exchanger
3yo comes here sharp from PID; that's synthetic, yes, though it (Tapeta) isn't quite the same as this place (Polytrack); still, at least it gives you some confidence he can handle it and again, he's been in real good form since June (3 1sts, 4 2nds in last 7 starts, all at PID); all that being said, he 's a ways behind these Beyerwise and hasn't been facing the caliber of runner he's taking on today so some significant hurdles remain. By Michael Hammersly

Race 6

Potomac River
He moves back into the overnight ranks after a pair of stakes starts and the last time he ran against such rivals he was a winner; adding to his appeal is the fact that he has had success over the local course; a concern is whether he will get the setup he needs as there does not appear to be an abundance of speed in this spot.
Tahoe Lake (BRZ)
He's seen top class competition as a Grade 1-placed winner who overall has placed in five stakes throughout his career; returned from a two month freshening last out, added blinkers, and ran a credible third at this distance; can move forward for the start, and can be closer to the pace than a number of these in a style that makes him appealing.
Macho Bull
Grade 3-placed winner is seeking to recapture his best form; barn changes things up and moves him back to the grass; he also picks up more ground for what will be his second start since May; can move forward, but note five-time winner's best recent races have come on the main track at Fair Grounds, which opens in November.
Keep Up
Grade 3 winner has a royal pedigree as a son of Unbridled's Song and Kentucky Oaks winner Keeper Hill; he's back to the overnight ranks after a trio of stakes starts; he also returns to the distance of his biggest win for what will be his second start back from the layoff; can be closer to the pace than some of these; leading contender.
Utley
He's from a strong female family; his dam was a Grade 1 winner and she has produced a Group 1 winner in Rainbow View ($1.1mm), as well as a pair of Grade 3 winners in Just As Well ($859K) and Winter View ($328K); ran a big race in his first start in five months last out to earn what ranks as this field's best last-race Beyer Figure; win candidate.
Rahystrada
He's a class runner as a multiple Grade 3 winner of $1.3mm; exits the Arlington Million that has since produced four next-out winners, three of them taking graded stakes: fifth-place finisher Temeraine accounted for G3 Kentucky Turf Cup at KD with a Beyer Figure of 94; sixth-place finisher, Little Mike, the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Bel, with a Beyer of 104; and 13th-place finisher, Indy Point, the Grade 2 John Henry at SA, with a Beyer of 98; tends to run well fresh and is a two-time winner at Kee.
General Logan
He's an accomplished sort as a winner of 4 of 10 starts; he's also returning to Kee and he was a winner over the local course in his turf debut last October; returns to the overnight ranks after a stakes start in which he encountered trouble; this will be his second start in blinkers.
Air Support
He's a multiple Grade 2 winner pushing $1mm in earnings, so he has loads of class appeal; he also has more natural speed than a number of these, and as such might have a tactical advantage; exits a key graded stakes, with the runner-up from it returning to take the $100K John's Call at Sar with a Beyer Figure of 93, and the fifth-place finisher, Roadhog, the $76K Leemat at PID, with a Beyer of 91; win candidate. By Dan Illman

Race 8

In Bloom
Her recent form hasn't been bad at all and she should have every opportunity to sit a favorable ground saving trip after breaking out of post one; not putting her at the top of the list, but she's worthy of consideration underneath in the exotics.
Cloudy Vow
Sire wins with approximately 13% of his turf starters and stakes placed dam won 2 of 9 starts for 49k, including 1 of 3 turf starts for 24k; G2 stakes placed filly is reunited with Bridgmohan for her turf debut.
Patinka
Have to respect the improved performance she showed up with in her turf dbeut in her latest outing, and Motion sees fit to ship her over from Delaware Park after that effort; lightly raced miss is still plenty eligible to have more to show us.
Rave Reviews
She has a fine turf pedigree and she's proven that she's capable of showing up with a performance that is strong enough to get her into the mix against these; note that she's one of two in here with more than a single victory next to her name.
Flattering Touch
Her form improved when she was placed over turf for the first time during her 2-year-old season, and like the idea of her making her first turf start since moving into this barn; feel that she's worth paying attention to in this spot at a price.
Magical Steps
Interesting to see the relatively quick turn around for her first start in America, and she will be sent out with Lasix; this filly is a 1/2 to stakes winner Mystic (4-31, 216k over turf) and stakes placed Magical Affair (2-5, 126k over turf); must consider.
Hot Tempo
She nearly earned a career best Beyer Speed Figure in her first start for this barn after a 35k claim, and viewing the presence of Goncalves as a positive indicator as he's won with 32 of 116 (27%) mounts for this barn in 2013; late running threat.
Eddy Gourmet
She's basically been a model of consistency since being sent out with Lasix and her best effort makes her a threat to walk away with the top prize; runner up from latest won next out at Bel on 10/20 going 1 1/8m over turf vs. 35k OPC's with an 83 Beyer.
Vintage Strike
She's run well in back-to-back starts since being returned form a layoff and note that Santana was aboard for the easy maiden score two races ago; Santana has won with 78 of 287 (27%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Sassy Kitten
Ramsey-owned filly goes out for a trainer and jockey that have won with 45 of 139 (32%) starters together in 2013, and this filly showed enough in her career debut to be added to the long list of contenders in this event.
Bluegrass Sapphire
It's really tough to knock anything that this miss has done going back through her last six starts and her dam was a G2 winner while winning 11 of 33 starts for 775k, including 10 of 28 turf starts for 673k; certainly not going to be surprised if she shows up with a solid performance.
Zipso Facto
Maybe her best effort is a cut or two below what will be required to win this, but her form has taken a turn for the better since being given another chance to see what she can do over turf two starts back; she is at a disadvantage with an extreme outside post in play.
Can't Catch Kate
Three of her four starts over turf have been fine performances and she's likely going to appreciate the synthetic-to-turf move for this; she needs to see a scratch from the main body of this race to draw in, and she's one of two signed on in here for Catalano and Hill.
Finura
Her form hasn't really improved all that much, if any, since a promising career debut, and she will have to show up with an effort that earns her a career best Beyer Speed Figure to get the better of this field; a tough outside post adds to the level of difficulty. By Brian Pochman

Race 9

Neidermeyer
Showed solid early foot while trying this level first time over the local surface but didn't have enough to go on late; colt should again be prominent early with the move to the fence and maybe he goes better second time over synthetic footing, but don't know that he's going to be able to get away from them here; siding with others on the win end.
Dreamalot
Ships in from New York where he just missed while sprinting with cheaper claimers on the lawn in his first start of the year; gelding isn't as good as some of his kin such as 2 time G1 SW and 3.5 million earner Spain, but he's run ok going long and his last suggests he's in form and deserves a crack over this new surface; worth a look.
Hiya Kid
Sire gets 11% first out winners and he's the first foal to race out of a dam who lost her lone start on the track; don't know a lot about this low percentage outfit but they haven't had any recent luck right out of the box and a pilot who has won just once this year gets aboard this slow working gelding.
Hathraan
Sire gets 10% debut winners with his offspring and the dam was a limited winner who dropped 2 winners from 3 foals to race; works are improved of late and the barn boasts some nice numbers with its newcomers of late, but it's not easy to win going long right out of the box.
Pegasus Flyer
Returned from the summer break to just miss with shades added while sprinting on the Kentucky Downs lawn; gelding did run ok on synthetic footing earlier in the year and his route try when beaten chalk 2 back was pretty good; contender.
Dr. Ireland
Failed to pick up his feet on dirt first time out and now he'll get Lasix for the stretchout; barn has had a pretty nice year from relatively limited starters and both of the dam's other foals to race are multiple winners including one who won 3 times going long so maybe the added ground helps.
Amazulu
Gets another new pilot after getting on track too late from a wide spot in his first crack over the local main track at the level; gelding may go better second time over the footing, but his style will need pace in order to be effectics; may find himself with work to do late.
Maker Reigns
Switches surfaces for his second crack back from the long break; colt's return try wasn't bad and he's been working of late as if he's got a move forward in him; lightly raced runner has a right to get in the exotics mix at a decent price today.
Vinegar Hill
Goes first time for a tag while stretching back out off a solid sprint effort on the Laurel lawn; barn boasts nice numbers with its runners second back from the break and he has been training over synthetic footing so he figures to take to the surface in the afternoon; may prove the main danger.
Professor Midnight
Adds the hood for his first crack with claimers after running a number over the local footing that lays over this bunch; barn's been kept out of the winner's circle here and maybe the pace setup isn't ideal on the slight cut back, but on his best this guy will be coming hard in the lane; though the price won't be much he looks tough to hold off.
Fast Flying Fist
Tries the route while returning to the local main track after offering little against better in his first start since the spring; interim drills aren't much for a weak second off the break barn but the outfit does do well with its stretchouts and each of this guy's 3 foals to race is a winner.
Rakete
He's had plenty of chances thus far but wasn't beaten much as the chalk last out when making his first start off this sharp outfit's claim; gelding is certainly a threat right back facing similar conditions, but he'll go from the fence to the outside slot in a big field and it's not as if he hasn't found ways to come up short in the past; consider.
