Keeneland: Closer Looks for October 13, 2013

webmaster|Oct 12, 2013

Race 2

Tiz Resplendent
Unlucky in the last pair, she makes her first visit to the claiming ranks today; did not show any firepower at the beginning of her career at this oval when breaking from this same tricky post; recent workout activity is encouraging though.
J. L.'s Princess
Upbeat work tab of late for this daughter of Smarty Jones who won 8 of 9 and 7.61 million (his offspring have won 13 percent of their first races); the dam went zero for 5; among the winning siblings is 26K earner Hannah G.
All Talk
Beaten favorite returns to the commmon ranks; her sire won a G2 and 360K; the dam won 4 of 23 and 217K; among the winning siblings is 119K earner Heaven on Hold; latest drill suggests she can improve with the surface switch.
Here Comes Cookie
Came up empty while odds-on at Mountaineer in her August getaway race but ran into a blowout winner in that affiar; one of several in this field dropping down from special weights and she can improve substantially as a result.
Zenzelda
Failed to fire in her Presque Isle debut against soft company; her sire won a G3 and 302K while the dam won 5 of 31 and 113K; this is her only foal to make it to the starting gate; generous odds assured.
Silver Exchange
Beginner hails from multiple G2 victor Badge of Silver who captured 1.04 million (his descendants have won 23 out of 179 debuts); the dam won 1 of 9 and 34K; sib to 31K earner Badge Master.
Sunandsea
Earned a personal best in that sharp performance at Indiana last month; she has a better first gear than most of this crew and should receive major pace relief today; worth some follow-up if the price is right.
Legacy Bird
Far back in her only attempt but that was over the lawn; her sire won multiple G1s on the main oval and 1.57 million; the dam won 1 of 4 and 25K; winning siblings include 106K earner Broad Stone.
Golden B. J.
Unfortunately, she draws wide yet again; this lass has suffered through some tough trips and moves way up the hierarchy today; showed no enthusiasm in her sole appearance over this course; hard to endorse for the top spot.
Hey Court Lady
Steady breeze pattern for this new face; her sire won a G3 and 986K (progeny of Closing Argument have won 37 out of 234 initial starts); the dam won 4 of 13 and 123K; sib to 114K earner Targhee Pass.
One Hot Kiss
Adds Lasix after coming up empty in her maiden voyage but was only 6 to 1 that day; her sire won a pair of G2s and 2.24 million; the dam won 1 of 13 and 16K; sib to 88K earner Offlee Clever; latest breeze was an upgrade.
Greeley's World
Has pressed the pace in several of her attempts but sole effort over the main track was a disappointment; must deal with an extreme outpost today yet could make first run on some of the questionable front-runners; difficult assessment.

Race 3

Slew Water Slew
Last time competing on a synthetic surface represents her lowest Beyer speed figure of 2013; finished 3rd in a KEE-synthetic $7,500 claimer one year ago at 6.5F; seemed to be shooting high at this level on dirt in last but ran well in defeat; clearly off latest synthetic start has something to prove on this type of oval.
Quite Explosive
Her last synthetic surface start June, 2012, represents a career-low Beyer speed figure; she finished 7th in a KEE-synthetic 30K claimer April, 2011, the only time racing on today's oval; 50 days absent since claimed off a high-win-percentage trainer which is not a good win angle; the 2-back winner and runner-up Beyered 89-73 in next-out PRX-starter alw. and $12,500 claiming wins.
Sweet Sweet Beauty
Won her 1st-ever synthetic-surface start in last when claimed off the non-winners of 2 score; idle 34 days while cutting back to her shortest-distance test since April; mixed reviews form the 2 dirt workouts for this; has certainly been a much better runner during career at distances longer than 7F.
Lady Symphony
The first thing leaps off the form in a negative way are the 15 minor awards with 2 wins; she often races well in defeat; her last synthetic-surface start was 3 years ago on KEE synthetic finishing 10th in a 15K-maiden claimer; the runner-up finisher from last Beyered 59 in a next-out IND-10K-claiming win.
Rainy Rain
Synthetic-surface win was posted June, 2011, gate-to-wire in an AP-10K-maiden claimer; best finish of 2013 was right on the lead; being on the engine playing catch me if you can is her best game; winless since scoring at 1.5F shorter; finished far back September, 2011, the last time sent at least this far was in an AP 7.5F 15K-claiming 6th-place finish.
Saturday Romp
Ran through the non-winners of 2 and 3 conditions on dirt which is a good sign because the main track has not been her best racing oval during career; owns the career-best Beyer on turf while graduating by more than 24 lengths on synthetic at longer than this; the 3-back winner repeated in a MNR-optional claimer with a 60 Beyer.
Van Gogo Girl
Lone-synthetic win was accomplished at longer while her best Beyer occurred on turf shocking KD claimers on the lead at longer; stays with the win rider who began the CD meet on on icy 0-for-20; defeated the 2-back show finisher who Beyered 60 in a next-out ELP-5K-claiming win.
Bold Tap
Last race on a synthetic surface was an 8th-place TP finish in a 5K claimer Sept, 2012; last win on synthetic was March, '12 at 6F in a TP-5K claimer; lone KEE synthetic start was the October, 2010, 11th-place career debut; declining Beyers since claimed off a career-best Beyer dirt win on the lead but that good-gate speed has been missing since the barn change.
Platinum Blue
1st time ever racing on a synthetic surface today; have mixed reviews in the 2 races off the claim from a high-win percentage trainer which is not a good win angle; raced well 2-back then went way off best game in a rare-dull wet-main track defeat for last.
Abelha Maestra
29%-winning 1st off the claim trainer sends her to a synthetic surface for the 1st time; the 2-back win looks even better now since defeating the runner-up finisher who Beyered 61 in a next-out FP-4K-claiming win; versatile sort can win from anywhere but saw her best Beyer in the 2-back romp sitting just off the other gate speed.
Islet
72 days since claimed back off a dirt loss; owns the field's best 79 Beyer posted June, 2012, in an AP-synthetic surface Miler in a $12,500-maiden claimer sitting just off the leaders before drawing off to by more than 14 lengths; the win rider from that race is on Van GoGo Girl for this; beat the 2-back runner-up finisher who Beyered 69 in her next-out RP-5K-claiming win.
Dubai Beauty
Must show more off her lowest Beyer since June but has been best during career on synthetic surfaces including a show finish in a KEE 6.5F-50K-maiden claimer at 6.5F: career-best Beyer was gate-to-wire at 1F shorter than this; the last time racing this far she held on well for 2nd money but 2-back when sent long beat 1 runner home noting the runner-up finisher Beyered 75-66 in her 2 next-out wins taking a MPM-53K stakes and a TDN-starter alw. event.

Race 4

Silver Frame
Hood comes off for her local return after getting on track too late off 5 months on the shelf at Delaware; didn't have much to offer here in the spring, but she did work well over the track earlier in the week and maybe her last is a sign that she's back on her game; breaks from a tough post for a runner without early foot, but her kick makes her a contender.
Shesakitty
Goes first time for an outfit that boasts some recent luck with this type; there are gaps in the absentee's worktab, but she's been here since the summer and she did show some ability as a juvenile; ouftit's record with limited starters on the year warrants her a good look.
Silken
Five year old firster debuts with some short recent breezes on her worktab for a little known outfit; sire gets 10% first out winners from his offspring and the dam was winless from 5 spins prior to dropping 3 winners.
Swan Quarter
Sire gets 8% debut winners and the dam was a 3 time winner and 95K earner whose 2 other foals to race were a combined 0 for 10 on the track; barn does boast a recent winner right out of the box and this 90K yearling buy's drill from the local gate the other day was solid.
Palmetto Star
Gets a solid journeyman pilot for her local debut in her first under this new outfit's care; filly breezed well over synthetic footing at Turfway last week and she did run well going long on the lawn before fading last time; dam was a 3 time main track winner who dropped 3 multiple main track winners including G2 SW turfer and 289K earer Gabriel Charles.
Bear On the Run
Tries this type of footing for the first time after missing just a length at the trip while troubled late on the Kentucky Downs lawn; she's got early foot which should help her sit a good spot in here and maybe a clean run makes the difference; consider.
Mema
Barn fires right out of the box and they name a capable pilot for this 200K yearling buy's unveiling; sire gets better than 13% winners from his firsters and the unraced dam dropped 4 winners including millionaire and G1 SW Seattle Smooth; recent drills suggest she's ready to come out firing in this lackluster field and she'll likely take plenty of tote support.
Crab Key
Took some money first out at Arlington early in the summer and ran ok for that initial experience; she's been breezing well here in the interim for the come backer and this barn boasts nice numbers with runners off this type of break; her unraced dam dropped 4 winners so maybe there's some improvement forthcoming here.
Coefficient
She's been away since showing speed from the outside slot in her well supported Delaware debut run over 14 months ago; filly gets Lasix while making her first start for another sharp outfit and she spent the entire summer getting acquainted with the new footing she'll step over today.
Miz Minnie Moon
Showed sharp early foot before backing out of it at 53-1 first out at Churchill last month; filly tries new footing today and has yet to work over the stuff; expect this first foal out of an unraced dam will be better with the initial effort behind her and maybe she again shows speed, but she's got a lot of improving to do.
Andmoreexcuses
Hasn't been close in any of her 4 career starts and now she'll try synthetic footing for a barn that doesn't boast a recent winner over the surface; she'll get the services of a capable pilot, but she was sent off at 126-1 when nowhere at the finish last time and there's not much to say she'll improve enough to factor in this spot.
Core Destination
Outside drawn miss returns from the freshening with a couple of solid recent local drills in tow; she didn't do much first out over the track but has shown she can run a little bit and this doesn't look to be the toughest MSW field ever assembled.

Race 6

Takemetohollywood
Sire 35-400 (9%) 2yo FTS; route winner (5K, 0-4 at 2, 0-3 sprint) has 0 winners from 1 runner (0-1 with 2yos, 0-1 with sprinters); barn 3-16 (19%, $3.17 ROI) past 5 years 2yo FTS MSW synthetic sprint; he's one of the rare registered white thoroughbreds.

One More Night
105K yearling; sire 18-103 (17%) 2yo FTS; sprint winner (57K, 0-1 at 2, 2-7 sprint) has 2 winners from 2 runners (1-1 with 2yos, 1-2 with sprinters); 3rd dam multiple G1 SW La Chaposa (Peru); barn 0-12 past 5 years 2yo FTS synthetic sprint; 9/27 work matches Street of Gold (5th Ta Wee Stakes turf 71 Beyer 10/5 IND)

Race 7

Celebrity Star
Solid 2nd-time improvement and now the race looks better 41 days ago the winner repeated to make it 2-for-2 in an IND-optional claimer with a 76 Beyer speed figure; has been working well for a 20%-winning fresh trainer; must overcome the rail which can be a tricky post position for any inexperienced runner..
Gigglin' Gal
223-day layoff for a trainer 1-for the last-21 with similar-layoff types; faced the 2-back winner who repeated in a GP-optional claimer with an 86 Beyer then 3-repeated in the G2-Gazelle with an 88; wish she fared better in her only synthetic-surface loss in antoher key race; the winner and runner-up from the OCT 12 race Beyered 79-73 in next-out TAM-68K stakes and CD-MSW wins.
Flak
April's KEE synthetic-surface 5th-place finish at today's distance was a key race as the runner-up and show finishers Beyered 87-75 in next-out CD-BEL MSW wins; needed last start off the 56-day absence when primed for this at longer; latest-CD dirt workout does not add to the appeal.
Wendy and Her Cats
Exits a career-best Beyer on grass; 7th-place fade the only other time racing on a synthetic surface where the trainer is on an 0-for-28 streak since 2012; has set the pace in 4 of 9 races and wants to be on or near the lead then hopes to find the missing stamina.
Ida Tequila
Ran to those 70-1 odds when badly outrun at the wire when landing behind similar rivals; 2nd-time out runners have every right to improve but the latest-workout for this was not very enticing while the trainer is 1-for the last-21 on synthetic.
Miss Brown Sugar
Must show more off the 2nd-lowest Beyer of her career but she just doesn't handle dirt very well; her career-debut at KEE was a better-than-it looks 6th and the 2nd-highest speed figure of career; the runner-up and show finishers that day Beyered 79-69 in next-out CD-MSW wins.
Sabel Browne (IRE)
29%-winning 1st-Lasix trainer since 2012 adds to the appeal after fading in last off the long layoff; returns in just 18 days for this; a beaten-favorite off that long benching needs a massive-Beyer boost to contend with this group.
Derheart
Field-best Beyer was posted 258 days ago scoring at a tough distance for a 1ster at 9F on turf; 26%-winning grass-to-synthetic angle for the trainer adds to the appeal but the barn is just 1-for the last-11 with runners following a 6-month or more absence.
Fast Alexia
Goes 1st time on a synthetic surface off the 2 lowest Beyers of her career; posted a steady worktab while reuniting with the rider of her lone-show finish and career-best Beyer; the 2-back show runner graduated next out in an ELP-MSW race with a 69 Beyer then repeated with a 79 in an optional claimer.
Infliction
Latest workout indicates she should handle KEE-synthetic just fine; came off the 50-day layoff to post a new-Beyer Top showing a massive style change rallying from next to last; 23%-winning MSW trainer adds to the appeal trying not to bounce returning in just 4 weeks for this.
Elusive Dame
Sire is 93-for-602 with 1st-time starters; is out of an unraced dam who produced 4 winners from 4 other foals to race including 1.3M-earning Grade1 Tizway (7-for-20); has been working like a runner.
She Be Keene
Career-best Beyer for last when flashing gate speed pressing the pace then fading; good-KEE workouts for this and like she has in each of her last 3 races figures to flash that gate speed then hopes to find the missing stamina.

Race 8

Cool Cowboy
Well-regarded for debut and finished behind My Crafty Friend, a gelding that returned to win the 89K Crown Ambassador Stakes for Indiana-breds (51 Beyer); hustled from gate 9/14 and made easy lead into the turn; opened up at will turning for home and was never threatened while under only hands and heels urging; could prove the main speed from the rail; respect.
Pure Luxury
Handled Harbor Bound in the debut and was flattered somewhat when that gelding returned to finish 2nd with a 74 Beyer (13-point improvement); don't be too harsh on the loss at KD as he faced a very promising runner in Boji Moon and the runner-up came back to win an 'N2L' heat here with an 80 Beyer; has good tactical speed, but needs a Beyer boost to take these down.
Sandbar
Well-beaten in the faster divsion of a $50,000 stake at Delaware, he then finished third behind a pair of fillies (finished tenth and fifth, respectively in the Grade Jessamine here on 10/9) going long on turf; has yet to gain ground from the stretch call to the wire and needed help from the stewards to obtain his lone victory; prefer others.
High Roll
Didn't have problem in debut, but that race hasn't produced much (7 next-out runners he beat compiled 0-3-0 record with 65 Beyer top); gave disappointing effort in G3 Arlington-Washington Futurity as he was going up-and-down with 5/16th remaining; according to 10/7 KEE Clocker Report, he "was not asked for run, in front of Ucanchangethename"; capable.
Chippewawhitechief
Bumped at the start last time, he was outsprinted through fast fractions while saving ground entering the turn; eased to the far outside turning for home and came with a determined run to outfinish them; the 7th-place finisher returned to upset an 'N2L' allowance on turf here with a 78 Beyer; should get some pace to attack once more and can threaten with a good late kick.
Pablo Del Monte
No surprise 1st-out for Ward, annually the top trainer in 4 1/2-furlong baby races during the spring meet; runner-up took a G3 at AP last month; no doubt he's quick, but the layoff and additional 2F are things to worry about; 10/5 KEE Clocker notes he "was impressive, broke 3-4 lengths in front of Hollywood Talent allowed that one to catch up, and easily pulled away".
Tashir
Form is dirtied up somewhat as he chased a gate-to-wire winner over a speed-favoring track in the faster division of 50K stakes on 7/29; last time, he attempted two turns off a big stretchout and passed some tired ones; think he'll like turning back in distance and there's some speed for him to target; may need career-best run against some promising foes; not convinced.
He's Got Talent
Didn't seem very interested on turf as the rider had to ask him early on the turn and he was all done with three furlongs left to run; beat a moderately-talented field in his career debut and he may work out a decent outside stalking trip in this heat; Ward is 19-97 over the past 5 years with 2yos off 61-180 day layoffs (2-4 turf-synthetic); prefer on bottom of exotics.

Race 9

Phonybooksnrecords
Have to respect the effort she showed up with at Indiana Downs to break her maiden two starts ago and she was in tough facing graded stakes competition in her latest outing while meeting winners for the first time; she'll appreciate the drop in class.
Allegheny Angel
Two of her three turf starts have been very good performances and like the idea of her being ready for a sharper try today while making her second start back from a layoff; 250k purchase has quality to her pedigree and feel that her best races are still likley to be in front of her.
Kazoom
From time to time she seems to give a solid account of herself, but simply feel that her best effort is short of the mark of what it will take to come out on top in this spot; her lack of early speed makes her a candidtae to be outrun throughout.
Honey Lake
If her most recent race is a sign of what's to come, she figures to be tough to deal with in this spot, and it might be worth noting that front wraps were removed for her latest start; she boasts the best last race Beyer Speed Figure in here by a wide margin.
Easter Service
Maybe there was a time when she might have shown up with a performance that was strong enough to get her into the mix against these, but she's going to need to really step it up over what she's been doing lately in order to contend; runner up from latest won next out at Mnr on 10/8 going 6f vs. 5k N1Y claimers with a 53 Beyer.
Tree Hugger
She was beaten by today's rival Honey Lake in her latest start and she figures to have a tough time turning the tables on that rival in this one, but if she can find her way back to one of her better performances, she can make some noise in this spot.
Muru Muru
Her turf form hasn't been bad by any means, but she's been facing 25k N2L claimers lately, and she's yet to run a race that is fast enough to suggest that she can be competitive in this spot; she looks like more of an outsider.
Why Not More
This is a trainer/jockey tandem that is worth looking out for and this mare has run a couple of her better races when fresh; she might be able to prove to be a little bit of a sneaky player in here and the runner up from her latest race returned to win next out at Atl on 4/30 going 5 1/2f over turf vs. starter alw. rivals with a 70 Beyer.
Confession
Two of her better efforts have been run at this venue, but she does appear to be the weaker half of the Humphrey/Oliver entry and her value will be compromised by being coupled with Honey Lake; nevertheless, a minor appears to be within her grasp.
Inspired Exchange
Like what she showed us in her first few starts earlier in the year and this 300k purchase deserves another chance to see what she can do over turf after an improved performance in her latest outing while making her second start back from a layoff.
Archetype
Not wild about what she showed us in her latest start after a layoff when finishing behind a couple of today's rivals but she did run well in a similar spot over this turf course at about this time last year; it might be worth noting the presence of Napravnik aboard another in here.
