Keeneland: Closer Looks for October 12, 2013
Race 1
Palladian
Decent rally in his debut over the turf at Indiana; his sire won multiple G1s and 2.7 million; the dam lost her only race; among the winning siblings is 37K earner Sans Serif; should appreciate the extra distance today.
Keeneland Kitten
Has failed to make an impact on the grass; his sire is turf star Kitten's Joy who bagged multiple G1s and 2.07 million; the dam won 1 of 9 attempt and 15K; there are no winning siblings to mention.
Kodiak Syd
Gets rid of the blinkers despite a fair sprint rally recently; did not have the smoothest of trips in the last pair of performances and perhaps can work out a clean stalking journey here; worth some follow-up.
Don Suave
Exits an above average race on the slop and, by default, should be a pace factor today; makes only his second attempt at the claiming level yet will likely fly under the better radar and offer generous odds.
Fourosixoone
Doubles in price after showing no firepower when cutting back in distance recently; his sire is G1 sprinter City Zip who amassed 818K while the dam won 3 of 20 and 64K; sib to 22K earner Hour Man.
Catfive
Beaten favorite tries the route racing scene for the first time and perhaps can improve under veteran Desormeaux who has done well for these connections in the past with a limited number of mounts; puzzling item.
Williamthewarrior
Quit early in that second run but makes the important drop from special weights; his sire won a G1 and 239K while the dam was without a victory in 7 tries; this is her only foal to make it to the starting gate; due for better racing luck.
Broadway Missile
Ran into repeat winners in the last pair over the green but can me a major player with this surface switch; his sire won 1.17 million (the majority of which was earned in dirt routes including a G1); the dam was zero for 3; sib to 51K earner Larboard Lady.
Approvethismessage
Respectable even effort in his maiden voyage on the grass; the colt's sire won a G2 and 2.58 million while the dam never raced; winning siblings include 51K earner Funny How; upgraded in the latest breeze at five-eighths.
Bad Student
Just missed the place in that second venture and should find himself closer to the early lead today; his sire won a G1 and 1.56 million; the dam won 1 of 17 and 24K; this is her only foal to make it to the starting gate.
Texas Tex
Presque Isle invaders have done fairly well at the meet thus far; this one's sire scored in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile en route to earnings of 1.05 million; the dam won 4 of 23 and 115K: sib to G2 victor Park Avenue Ball, winner of 1.04 million.
Tribunus
No match for Bad Student in their last match-up and it appears he is destined for another extra-wide trip today; although trying his fourth different rider in as many starts, this colt is in the hands of trainer who has a solid win percentage on the year. By Jim Kachulis

Race 5
It's a Bad Rapit
His only other synthetic-surface start represents a career-best Beyer speed figure; new barn yields 23% winners 1st-time out with newly-acquired runners with 41 days to regroup off latest grass rally when screaming out for more distance and gets 1F extra for this; saves ground with 1 big-late kick.
Mister Gable
Sire is 59-for-410 with 1st-time starters; is out of a 1-for-11 dam (16K) who produced 2 winners from 2 other foals to race including 18K-earner Rahy's Reflection (2-for-12); was outworked by the other 1ster Ebullition for this.
Ledokol
1 year and 1 week since his last venture onto a synthetic surface where fading badly at longer in a key race; last sprint start was an exacta finish rallying on MTH dirt; the 1-for-35 jockey-trainer combo since 2012 does not add to the appeal.
Ebullition (ARG)
Sire is 0-for-3 with North American 1st-time starters; G2-ARG dam went 2-for-11 (18K) producing 4 winners from 5 other foals to race including 135K-earner Leavenworth (4-for-29); good-gate workout for this for a 43%-winning KEE-jockey-trainer combo; wish the barn yielded better than 7% debut winners since 2012 but still seems a major player at 1st asking in a field lacking superstars.
Charismatic Pulpit
March absentee for a trainer known to win with long-layoff types; 1st time on a synthetic surface is the issue; the debut winner repeated in an OP-optional claimer with a 94 Beyer; the 2-back winner repeated with a 71 speed figure then took a TAM-58K stakes 2 starts later with an 81; beat the show runner in that event a next-out 65 Beyer TAM-MSW winner.
Iamdonewithmylawer
Just missed in last-turf start noting his last synthetic-surface start was also an exacta finish; clearly seemed to like this 6.5F distance in last; the workout for this on dirt was not very enticing but a good sign that in latest that he removed the front wraps then drilled a career-best Beyer.
Tap the Admiral
Not much form to speak of from 1st pair on dirt and turf now attempts synthetic seeking answers; in latest broke 10th then passed a few giving the impression that longer distances than 6.5F would work out a lot better; improved workout for this on dirt but have him ranked a notch below the top contenders.
Yardbird Misfits
Exits a field-best Beyer on grass at longer; switches to synthetic for the 1st time while the 45%-win rider for the trainer remains right here; rallied then hung on the money 2-back vs.Iamdonewithmylawer but turned up as a new horse when blinkers were added for last so can turn the tables today; the 3-back runner-up finisher graduated next out in an IND-MSW event with a 62 Beyer.
Red Moon Rising
Took 5-1 betting money in a dull-debut try 34 days ago finishing last; was working very well prior to the unveiling so despite the good worktab for today's 2nd attempt he clearly has a lot to prove on race day; some runners leap up and perform dramatically better 2nd-time out.
Arriving
Primed for this at longer when taking heavy-betting action; he floundering late with the added distance attached producing a 40-point Beyer reduction from the sprint debut; the show runner from last Beyered 88 in his next-out KEE-MSW win; the worktab for the 1st synthetic-surface start is not appealing but the new rider wins 38% for the trainer since 2012. By Art Gropper
Race 6
Coming Thru
He's meeting up with a solid bunch of N1X rivals today, and not only does his best race appear to be a cut or two below the top contenders in here, but his recent form hasn't been anywhere near his best; prefer to keep looking around in here.
Empire Knight
Lightly raced colt obviously has some natural ability to work with and he certainly made it look easy in breaking his maiden in his turf debut at today's distance in his latest outing; he's out of a minor stakes winning dam who won 7 of 22 starts for 107k, including 3 of 7 turf starts for 53k; this colt is a 1/2 to Situational Ethics (2-19, 74k over turf); must respect.
Newfound Zapper
Have to be mildly concerned when seeing all of the time off he's needed between starts lately, but he was stakes placed over turf as a 2-year-old, and his latest effort at today's distance at Kentucky Downs was a solid effort; it's interesting to see Desormeaux show up for this.
Thorin
Like to see what he did in his career debut at Penn National and he's eligible to be ready to bounce back with a sharper try while meeting up with winners for the second time; however, he does need to step up his game in a noticeable way in order to contend.
Soul Winner's Fire
His two turf starts have been much better than what he's shown in his two dirt starts and he commands his share of respect in this spot based on how sharp he was racing over turf at Indiana Downs two races back; late running type is still plenty eligible to have more to show us.
Wings of Fortune
He's run well in all four of his turf starts while racking up runner-up finishes and it's probably a good idea to respect his chances against these off of those performances; this is his first start beyond 1 1/16m, but he has a long winded pedigree, and Napravnik has won with 43 of 156 (27%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Mandola
Half-brother to multiple stakes winner French Braids (3-8, 80k over turf) has run well since day one but he's going to need to dial it up along the Beyer Speed Figure scale to prove to be the one in this spot; not counting him out of a spot underneath in the exotics, but leaning toward others for the top spot.
Kings Village
He's the only one in here with three wins next to his name, but his turf form has been so-so at best, and he's going to have to find a way to produce a performance that is much stronger than what he's done so far in order to have a say in the outcome.
Knights Nation
Like with a number of these, today's 1 1/2m distance is a concern, but his turf and synthetic surface form has been solid and he looks like he's in good form entering this race; the early pace might be slow to develop and that would be just fine with this gelding.
Formidable Heart
He showed a good deal of natural ability in his first two starts and he was last seen facing much tougher in a G3 event at Arlington Park; runner up from latest won next out at AP on 8/17 going 1 1/4m in a G1 with an 88 Beyer.
Cape Savannah (GB)
When seeing what he did running in turf marathons overseas, it looks like his first start in America was designed as a steppingstone to this event, and note the addition of Lasix; he has a live look to him in this spot with Leparoux taking over.
Layton Register
Late running colt was overdue to break his maiden in his latest start but maybe he figured out what he's supposed to be trying to do in that winning performance; he's clearly fast enough to be competitive against competition of this caliber and he might not mind the 1 1/2m distance he's being asked to negotiate.
River Lemon
He deserves credit for the consistent approach that he's developed but both of his wins have been earned against softer and it's tough to recommend him for anything more than a minor award.
Happy Fella
He ran well in posting an upset win at Saratoga off of a layoff three starts back, but that level of performance hasn't been the norm for him, and he can't afford to show up with anything less than that if he's to see his number posted on top after this one is run. By Brian Pochman
Race 7
Bird Maker
| 1/2 sprint SP Cheechako (106K, 0-2 at 2) by 10% 2yo FTS sire; sprint winner (67K, 1-1 at 2) has 3 wnrs/4 rnrs (0-3 with 2yos, 2-4 sprinters); family multiple G1 route SW Birdstone (1.5M, 2-3 at 2, won debut, 1-2 sprint); barn 0-19 pst 5 yrs 2yo FTS MSW synth sprint; 8/23 work matches Taketheodds (3rd FTS MSW dirt 68 Beyer 9/28 CD); 9/24 work matches Katie O. | Toni's Hollyday |

Wicked Temper
190K RNA wnlng, 315K yrlng; sire 12% 2yo FTS; dam 2yo G2 turf SW (66K) with 0 wnrs/5 rns (0-2 with 2yos, 0-1 sprinters); 3rd dam 2yo G3 turf SW Muhbubh (England, 66K); barn 0-16 pst 5 yrs 2yo FTS MSW synth sprint; 8/28 work matches Hesinfront (FTS Fri. R6); 9/23 work matches Fela Kuti (68 dirt Beyer); 10/7 work matches Broadway Zen (35 dirt Beyer)
Kala Ryan

Le Plume
50K short yearling; sire 167-978 (17%) 2yos; 1st starter from unplaced dam; 2nd dam multiple SW Sophie My Love (234K, 1-3 at 2, 1-2 sprint); barn 1-14 (7%, $0.94 ROI) past 5 years 2yos MSW dirt/synthetic sprint; not much thus far.
Boom Boom Vroom
1/2 G3 SW Sindy With an S (330K, 3-8 sprint) by multiple G1 sprint SW sire (669K, 0-1 at 2, 2-8 with 2yo FTS, 6-45 with 2yos); winning dam (67K, 0-3 sprint) has 7 wnrs/8 rnrs (4-6 with 2yos, 5-6 sprint); barn 1-11, $0.92 pst 5 yrs 2nd-out dirt/synth sprint; grappled with runner-up before tiring against top filly Sweet Reason; working well; expect speed.
Aurelia's Belle
Sire 11% 2yo FTS; placed dam (19K, 0-3 sprint) has 2 wnrs/4 rnrs (1-2 with 2yos, won debut, 1-3 sprinters); dam 1/2 G1 SW Aldiza (496K, 2-5 at 2, 3-10 sprint), 2yo G1 sprint SP Aunt Anne (112K), G2 SW Atelier (749K, 1-4 sprint); barn 17%, $1.33 pst 5 yrs 2yo FTS MSW synth sprint); "in hand, looks ready for good effort," according to 10/8 KEE Clocker
Rumba
100K yearling; sire multiple G1 route SP (393K, 1-1 sprint, 3-26 with 2yo FTS); 1st starter from sprint-placed dam (22K, 0-3 at 2, 0-6 sprint); dam 1/2 multiple route SW Megan's Halo (115K, 1-4 at 2, 0-6 sprint), G3 SW Indian Ocean (176K, 1-2 sprint); barn 0-16 past 5 years 2yo FTS MSW synthetic sprint.
Maybe Lily
5K weanling, 6K yearling; sire 21-281 (7%) 2yos; route winner (66K, 0-4 at 2, 0-4 sprint) has 2 winners from 3 runners (1-2 with 2yos, 2-2 with sprinters); dam 1/2 G3 SW Dream Launcher (572K, 0-1 at 2, 3-15 sprint); barn 0-4 past 5 years turf/synthetic (0-1 with 2yos; showed brief speed 17 days ago, but likely chasing Boom Boom Vroom here. By Dan Illman
Race 8
Miss Stellsie
Battled with odds-on Bray Secret and appeared to have put that one away entering the turn; opened a clear lead, but got leg-weary and needed 13.52 seconds to complete the last furlong; drops back in with fillies and figures to show speed, but there are other pace horses to her outside and she may struggle with the additional distance; will race with hind shoes off.
E Built This City
Showed speed vs. next-out graded winner Bahnah at CD, then took advantage of weaker when romping in slow time at IND; needs several lengths to find Beyer-wise in order to compete with these, but she was visually impressive last time; zipped to the front, took minor pressure from a 25-1 shot (finished 7th) and poured it on; may have to work harder to get the front here.
Bellarada
A gate-to-wire winner of her debut, she bobbled just a bit at the start of the 8/14 race and was far behind the leaders down the backstretch; she got a decent setup as the pace was fast and contentious, and Bellarada rallied widest without threatening the winner; didn't do much in the Lassie, but should appreciate cutting back in distance and dropping in class.
Angie's Prim Lady
Exits a fast-paced race won by an odds-on favorite (stakes-placed filly); took her shot with a three wide bid on the turn, but was rebuffed in upper stretch; ran on to be second-best and has enough speed to find a good spot here; the surface is the major issue as she's never raced on polytrack; barn is 3-6 ($3.50 ROI) over the past 5 years with 2yos going dirt/synth; capable.
Milam
Handled J J Julep (returned to win by 6 with 59 Beyer on turf at ELP, then ran 2nd in the Ky. Cup Juvenile Fillies with a 62) in a race in which the top 2 finishers ran 1-2 around the track; part of legitimate pace in the Pocahontas before fading (runner-up run 2nd in Alcibiades); "good strong finish, last quarter in 23 seconds," according to 10/1 KEE Clocker; contender.
Maco Light
Thought inside was good at AP 9/15 and she saved ground behind favored pacesetter before easing out 3W turning for home; came with professional run to prevail over late-runner that returned to finish 2nd here with 63 Beyer; earned competitive fig and may get nice setup tracking quick pace; "in reserve, easily better than Contributor," notes 10/4 KEE Clocker; factor.
Henny Jenney
Not sure she beat much (only one of the five next-out runners returned to crack the trifecta with Beyers ranging from 12-57); stalked along the inside before angling out to split rivals turning for home; she settled matters quickly once set down for the drive and was drawing away despite hopping back to her left lead late; should appreciate a good pace in this spot; not out of this.
Cynical Storm
Didn't think that was the strongest MSW she beat at Spa; hustled to gain position, but was in bit tight on rail entering turn; inside opened up mid-bend and she shot on through to take command; dug in late to fend off runner-up and may work out a good outside stalking trip here; Pletcher only 2-22 ($0.47 ROI) past 5 years with 2yos dirt/synthetic (0-8 in sprints); can't ignore.
Beautiful Dancer
2nd- and 3rd-finishers from are now stakes-placed, but layoff is concerning; showed couple of gears as in front after the opening 1/16th only to yield to pacesetter; wasn't fazed by inside as she moved up along rail to grab lead at 1/8th pole; looked leg-weary, but just held off runner-up; "not asked for effort, in company with Infliction," states 10/3 KEE Clocker Report. By Dan Illman
Race 9
Sarach
Her form has improved since being returned from a layoff back in June and this G2 winning miss owns the early speed to take full advantage of her rail post position; if horses like Leigh Court and I'm Already Sexy decide to be aggressive from the break, this filly will be content to sit just off the lead.
Say (IRE)
It looks like she's done some very nice work racing overseas this year and she's out of a multiple G1 winning dam who won 8 of 29 turf starts for $2 million, including this event; O'Brien won this event in 2011 with Together after that one made her first start in America in the First Lady.
Caroline Thomas
She's out of a dam who won this event and this filly is capable of producing a pretty nice performance on her best day; feel that she's capable of better than what she showed last time and she was up against it trying to rally behind a slow early pace.
Alterite (FR)
She was a sharp winner in recording a G1 victory in her first start in America, and as long as she can come right back with that level of performance, another G1 win appears to be within her reach; she has to be rated as a top contender while going out for one of the strongest turf outfits in the country.
Emotional Kitten
Prefer Kitten's Dumplings of the Ramsey-owned fillies in here, but this miss came up just short in a G1 event over turf at BHP two starts ago, and that's a pretty nice horse she chased to the finish that day; interesting to see Gomez get the call for this.
Concise (GB)
She enters this race fresh off of a G1 stakes placing and she gave a pretty nice account of herself in a race won by today's rival Alterite; she's been on the improve and she's still eligible to have more to show us; not willing to count her out of it.
Kitten's Dumplings
Multiple graded stakes winner was extremely sharp in recording three consecutive victories between May and July, and her late running style probably wasn't a good fit for a speed favoring Del Mar turf in her latest outing; it looks like she's trained well coming up to this and she gets a rider switch to a guy who rides this turf course as well as anyone.
Leigh Court
She just seems to keep improving with each passing start, and if anyone in here is going to lead this field every step of the way, this will likely be the one to do it; this is a tough test for her, but have to respect her early speed, and she got the job done against a solid field in her one turf attempt.
I'm Already Sexy
Have to respect the way that she's stepped it up along the Beyer Speed Figure scale in recent starts and she enters this race fresh off of a G3 score; she's shown the ability to adapt to any early pace scenario and she figures to sit just off of the early speed of Leigh Court; Geroux has won with 16 of 64 (25%) mounts for this barn in 2013. By Brian Pochman
Race 10
Pentathlon
Switches surfaces after showing some speed on the Kentucky Downs lawn first time out; barn boasts some recent luck with second out runners and the SW dam was a main track winner who dropped several who also won on the footing; starts from the inside slot again but has a right to improved while in for a tag today.
Grand Dame
Tries synthetic footing for the first time after finishing behind one of the gal drawn to her immediate outside here in each of her last 2 cracks at the level; she doesn't have any early foot and that could force her to again make her run in a wide path, but she did return to blowout ok last week so maybe she finds herself closer early here; consider.
Justice Judy
Makes career start number 15 in this spot after hitting the board in 8 straight spins; career slate clearly suggests she isn't most interested in winning, but she'll drop off her last and does have early lick which should have her in the thick of this one from the bell; one to beat, now we just have to find who can do it.
Artful Lady
Should have some bottom for the turn back to sprint in her initial synthetic try; she has shown a little bit of early interest going long and that could help her keep in touch with the pacesetters early; one to consider.
Cue E Dee
Dropper was caught in a wide spot when beaten home by the last out runner up who returns again in this spot; filly does have early foot and that could prove to be a big plus in here; she'll need to improve while getting a switch back to Albarado in her first spin over this type of footing, but she's a threat in here.
Broken Blues
Offered little in her 2 starts this spring and now she'll return for a barn that boasts some recent luck with its fresh runners; recent work pattern is a little spotty, but she will start from a better draw than she did in her local key race debut and both of her sibs to race are winners.
Bold Broad
She's another who didn't offer much in her 2 starts and now she'll try new footing; filly is kin to 3 multiple winners and maybe this new surface helps bring out some of that ability, but the barn hasn't had much luck with its limited starters this year and there aren't any recent drills on tap as of press time.
I'm Straight
Offered for a tag after showing little in the Indiana Downs off the turfer first time out; filly is out of a dam who won twice sprinting and her lone sib to race won 4 sprints so maybe she moves forward with the initial experience behind her; new pilot has been blanked at the stand.
Glitteronthehiway
Fresh filly drops in for a tag for the initial time while getting a switch to a solid pilot for her return to synthetic footing; she took plenty of money in her first start of the year here back in the spring, but didn't do much running in that one; maybe the class relief helps.
Medium of Exchange
Beaten last out chalk couldn't mount a rally in the Saratoga slop while making her first start in 5 months; new outfit does great work right off the claim and this filly did run well for second money 2 back; works suggest she'll have little trouble taking to this new surface; contender.
Majesty Goddess
Barn has won just once on the year and hasn't had any recent luck with newcomers; 4 year old worked well last week and her sire hits with 14% of his debut runners; dam was a 3 time sprint winner and 2 of her 3 sibs to race are winners.
Vice Dancer
Outside drawn filly boasts a sharp drill for her local return after spending nearly 3 months on the bench since the fade first time going long; she owns the field's best synthetic number so the return to this surface could help get her going; can't overlook. By Steve Grabowski
