Keeneland: Closer Looks for October 10, 2013

DRF Staff|Oct 09, 2013

Race 1

A Better Tomorrow
Maker is 22 for 103 or 21% the last 5 years when going from a MSW to a maiden claimer; gelding has much more speed than he just flashed; he did get a feel of the surface 5 days ago and cozy slot can't hurt; backers can point to the fact the top sibling did bank over $150K; must respect everything from this barn.
Heavenly Shiloh
Gelding had to be off for 13 months for a pretty serious reason; the return was okay, but then the regression in last when taking the overland route; the 4th, 5th, and 6th finishers in last took cheaper maiden claimers next out then this guy is offered for today; it's just hard to find the upside after 21 defeats.
Barry Shortpants
Even on the drop, tough to adore after he just beat one to the wire; one angle to think about: note the best Beyer career by far was in a similar 2nd off the layoff run; key off that 2013 opener and if he can run back to that race, the rest may be looking at minor awards.
Expensive Candy
At least he posted one of his better Beyers in last; the 8/31 show horse graduated next out in a maiden $15K claimer in Indiana with a 66 Beyer; note runner has also missed a tag that is half the price he is offered for today; passing.
Bay Head
Can't be thrilled with the beats vs. softer; soph was over 3 clear two back, has been stabled here so he should be comfortable with the surface and barn has spotted them just fine this year with limited starters; could move forward here.
Giacoslew
Note soph broke in the air two back before the track and fade job in last; he did pass a couple of horses two back and was a bit more keen to run early in last; don't be shocked if this one runs big today.
Battlements
The drop is logical after 3 poor efforts; 4 for 26 dam banked nearly $185K; this is her first to race; note wraps were added two back; apparently not much of a work horse, look for rider to be aggressive here and send hard; brief threat?
Bolting Brown
In tight in the only synthetic effort in Chicago; gelding does seem to be improved off the slight freshening; never like to see them give up clear leads like he did two back but there is not a ton of zip in here; could easily be enticed into gimmick action.
The Teuff Way
Mirror races vs. softer and neither was pretty; dam's lone win was a dirt sprint; this is her first to race; third new pilot takes the reins and there is a question about the distance as 4 of sire's 5 wins were sprints; passing.
Dillo
Soph caught much faster splits last time than the debut and just could not keep up; dam was unraced; considering the drop and the pair of races under his belt, can't fault those that project a peak performance today.
Ceebett's Soul
Runner lost ground late both times he was in the money on the synthetic; runner was beaten over 13 the last time for this price; not my kind of play.
Conserve
Spotty race record and no speed genuine concerns; he has a lot of work to do to that top sibling City Stormer, who won 7 times and banked over $200K; runner draws outside again and that didn't work out well in last; would think long and hard before taking too short a number. By Brian Mulligan

Race 2

Taproot
Beaten favorite returns to his proper distance and should be within range of softer fractions than in the last assignment; in his only placing over this course, he broke from the rail also and turned in a sharp rally despite traffic trouble.
Grand Sensation
Veteran gelding has scored via the turf-to-dirt method in the past and had a legitimate excuse in his latest defeat; the leading money winner of the field, he has some serious back class to consider; can rebound with the return to his preferred surface.
Hokes Hope
This steady customer rarely runs a bad race and has the proven versatility of setting the pace or rallying from a few lengths off; the latest try at Presque Isle was particularly sharp where he stayed on well despite an extended speed duel; playable.
Santo Gato
Failed in 2 prior visits here and although he met better stock in the last encounter, he may have trouble against this group which comes up very strong for the price tag involved; has only 2 career wins on the main oval and cannot be endorsed for the top spot.
Que Posse
Newcomer to this oval ran against very tough optional claimers at Arlington and gets major class relief now; earned some powerhouse Beyers earlier in the year and is much better than the last pair of efforts suggest; could prove to be the right value play in an open race.
Coronet of a Baron
A useful comeback race was turned in last month; on more than one occasion, he has scored via the second start back method; should be a square price and is worth some inclusion despite inexperience at this oval.
Highlight
Toss the latest venture on the turf; he raced well here at the spring meet, earning decent checks in races where he did not have the smoothest of trips; never seems to get bet and that trend is very likely to continue.
Heywoods
Recent workout activity is solid but the fact remains, he has never shown much preference for this course; 3 of his local defeats, however, were against tough 1x allowance company; still in search of his first victory at this common distance, a major knock. By Jim Kachulis

Race 4

Valerie Victoria
Debut was nice but the horse she beat won a $15K maiden claimer at Parx Sept. 23 so it was a pretty weak group; she only beat one when she tried turf in her next start in a stakes race at Monmouth and could be up against leaving from the rail here; looking elsewhere.
Habeebee
Ships in from Woodbine where she won a slowly-run $25K maiden claimer Sept. 20 and she will need to pick things up to contend here; at least we know she can handle Poly; all 4 sibs are winners the best being $107K stakes winner Casa Mimaty so there could be some upside potential.
In Tall Cotton
She comes out of a live barn and she ran solid races both times she ran over Poly at Arlington; like the way she took advantage when the rail opened up for her in her smart win when she ran for a tag for the first time in her latest; she also doesn't need the lead and she could be very dangerous from a stalking position; contender.
Richies Sweetheart
She figures to be involved right from the start and it is easy to forgive her for fading after setting wicked fractions in the one-mile Grade 3 Arlington Washington Lassie; she'll appreciate the easier company and she could take a big step forward in her second start back; the pick in a wide-open event.
Pearl of a Girl
First from Ward got off to a poor start and never got involved when she tried turf and a middle distance for the first time in an allowance race at Churchill Sept. 7; she's back with her own sex and should appreciate both the easier company and move back to a sprint; not out of the question.
Lady Caroline
First half of the entry overcame a poor start to win a $15K state-bred maiden claimer at Indiana Downs and although she showed a lot of determination it was a pretty weak group and she will need to improve dramatically to contend here; first time on Poly is also an issue so we're going to look in other directions.
Chapparra
She won her debut on Poly so she won't mind the surface switch after trying dirt in her second start in a state-bred stakes at Indiana where she never got involved after getting bumped around pretty good at the start; none of the horses she beat in her debut have won yet and she looks like a minor player in this spot.
Nevergetsold
She's improved quite a bit in her last two and the horse she beat at Gulfstream Aug. 24 won her next two starts; she goes for a new trainer here and both of Pessin's starters at the current meet ran well; two sibs, one winner, and he's won 9 sprints but wasn't effective running on synthetic tracks at Golden Gate or Hollywood Park so it's hard to say how she'll handle the surface switch; she easily owns the best Beyer Speed Figures in the field, though; contender.
Red Bottoms
Horse that finished second in her race only over a synthetic track at Presque Isle came back to win a state-bred stakes with a 69 Beyer Speed Figure; she's in for a tag for the first time since she won her debut and was claimed for $30K at Churchill in June and should be considered for the exotics.
Tomei
Won the only time she ran for a tag but not sure what to make of how poorly she ran over this track when she made her debut here in April; it was a much tougher spot and it was just her debut; she was taken out of her latest race at Calder when she had to avoid a fallen rider but she finished okay; the winner is undefeated and romped in a stakes race in her next start; live 2-year-old barn adds to her appeal; playable.
My Lani Rose
Second half of the entry had to drop all the way to $7,500 to win a race and the 35 Beyer Speed Figure she earned isn't going to scare anyone; first foal out of a mare that won a single race and earned $18K drew a tough post and she will need to improve signifcantly to contend here; passing. By Randy Goulding

Race 7

Muppet Man
He's back on a synthetic surface and both of his career wins, as well as his Grade 3-placing, have come over such a track; is one of this field's quickest runners, and suspect he could slip away from his rail post; he also will be adding blinkers; there is some concern, however, that he could be pressed by Tell All You Know, and possibly the fresh Doc Almon; leading contender, nonetheless.
Pikestar
He's cutting back to a sprint distance for the first time since the summer, and horses shortening up from front-running efforts in route races can be quite effective; as for the return to a synthetic surface, note he won his maiden on Keeneland's main track in April 2012; can share.
Tell All You Know
A half-brother to multiple stakes winner Don'ttalktome ($211K), he steps up in class off a gusty win, one in which he found himself in what can be a demanding spot for a horse, dueling between rivals; the race picture might be different here as he does not appear to have many pace rivals, with his most obvious, Muppet Man, tucked to his inside; gets ideal tracking trip?
Dynamical
He ran a big race on the turnback, when on the move from a mile and a half to seven-eighths he finished fourth against quality runners; figures to be even sharper here in his second straight sprint start; as for the return to a synthetic surface, he is a winner over the local strip; is a half-brother to Featherbed, a stakes winner of $227K; might get nice stalking trip; choice.
Shmooz Talker
He's stepping up in class off the claim, but note he was stakes-placed earlier in his career and he is a half-brother to stakes winner Carson's Castle; handled good ground last out at Sar, and now, for the first time in a long while, moves back to a synthetic track, where he is a winner; barn tends to excel with new acquisitions.
Cummings Road
He's a promising sort as a half-brother to Roxy Gap, a Grade 2 winner of $952K; both are from a multiple stakes-placed mare who ran out $129K; is appealing as one who seems well-suited to this demanding kind of distance of six and a half furlongs; he won his debut at the trip, and last out scored at seven-eighths, his second win over a synthetic track; capable.
Circle Unbroken
He's the most accomplished member of the field as a Grade 3 winner, a score that came in the Bashford Manor last year at CD; charts new territory with the move to a synthetic track; like that he is a fresh horse, as this will be his first out since April; one to preview in the paddock.
Tilden Lane
He's making a couple of notable moves; he's returning to the main track for the first time this year; he's also cutting back to one turn, again for the first time this season; exits a quick-paced race but on the turnback looking for him to be making his bid in the later stages.
Razzo Succo
He's a consistent sort, having finished no worse than third in at least his last 12 starts; he also owns a string of competitive Beyer Figures; can be closer to the pace than he found himself last time, when he did not get the break from the fence in a turf sprint; before that, he was second in a synthetic track race at this six and a half furlong trip; win candidate.
Doc Almon
He will be giving up recency to these as he has not seen action since February; however, barn excels with its comebackers and this one indicated his readiness to roll with a bullet half-mile move in 46.20 seconds 10/2; handled winners in his first attempt last out, and as a fresh horse is a threat to press Muppet Man and Tell All You Know. By Mary Rampellini

Race 8

Anusara
Nice 3rd on turf at KD Sept. 7; not only was that her first turf try but it was her first action in over 2 months as well; that being said, today's foe Spun Silky did beat her while running 2nd, but not by all that much (1/2 length); first time on synthetic but usually if you handle turf, you handle this.
Not Again Nancye
Tough beat 2nd at 47-1 at this level at CD Sept. 21; that shows the level suits - at least when she's racing on dirt; today it's first time synthetic but the good news is she's already handled IND wet dirt and CD fast dirt so that bodes well for handling this place; Canchano rides and he was up for her 2 best races.
Lady Raven
Hasn't been seen since she gave way badly in a turf sprint at GP Jan. 9; good news, though, is there's no big panicky drop for this return; this does mark her first synthetic try so she must deal with that along with the layoff, but she's handled turf well so that bodes nicely for handling this; been working smartly at CD for this return, too; kin to A Huevo (won G1 De Francis Dash).
Causara
The light may have gone on; oh, she flashed talent this winter/spring but after 3 months off she resurfaced at PID and blasted maidens; that's synthetic, yes, though it's a different synthetic than this place; however, she handled this track nicely in the spring and she certainly looks like a much better filly now than she was then; still, it's first time vs. winners so the class hike is significant.
Janis's Joy
Some solid turf form in the south, which as noted above bodes well for handling this place as it's her first time on synthetic; the bigger concern is the class level - while her last 2 races were smart note they came vs. restricted claimers; she's well up in class today, to go along with unfamiliar ground.
Evandear
Looked super blasting restricted claimers at ELP in July 2012 but then came 4 months off and 5 not-so-hot outings; the good news, though, is she's perked up of late with a good 2nd at ELP and decent 3rd at IND; those were dirt, yes, but note her maiden win on TP's Polytrack in March 2012 and a decent 3rd in her only prior try here.
Miffed
Done nothing wrong in 6 starts, finishing in the tri in all 6; only local try, April 17, saw her finish a decent 3rd against somewhat similar; hasn't been seen since June 26 but she's sure working well and considering she ran sharply in her debut she looks as though she can fire fresh.
Terfaashah
Came out firing to win her debut on HAW dirt last November but then wasn't seen again for 9 months; when she did reappear at AP Aug. 18 at least she did so at this level, so there was no tag attached, and she didn't run badly considering the layoff, that it was first time vs. winners, vs. elders and first time on synthetic; freshened again since but she's worked nicely of late and it's encouraging Peitz again does not risk her for a tag.
Noun
Only 2 synthetic tries came here and she was a decent 3rd in each; no factor in a KD turf sprint Sept. 7 (finished well behind today's foes Spun Silky and Anusara) but that was also her first start in almost 2 months; nice to see no drop and she has worked 3 times since.
Stealth Bolt
Came oout firing to win her debut on WO's Polytrack June 16; first 2 starts vs. winners, however, weren't pretty at all; in her defense, while both came at this level they also both came on turf - maybe that's not what she wants; well, she's worked sharply of late (on Polytrack no less) and maybe the freshening and move to this footing can snap her back to life...maybe.
Spun Silky
Continues her solid form; a good 2nd (beating a few of today's rivals) in a turf sprint at KD Sept. 7; only 2 synthetic tries weren't much, but those were also her first 2 career starts at GG in May 2012 and after those she was gone 11 months; she's surely a much better filly now than she was then; kin to Moon de French (SW, G1 SP in SoCal).
Graceful Rage
Plugged along for 3rd at about this level at ELP July 6 but let's face it, she wasn't much of a threat (beaten 6 1/4 lengths); also hasn't been seen since so now you have a layoff to go with the fact it's her first time on synthetic; at least has handled SAR dirt, OP dirt, CD dirt and ELP so that makes you optimistic she can handle this; but even so, she likely needs to come back having improved more than a few lengths if she's to be a player; and at least that ain't outta reach. By Michael Hammersly
