Keeneland April sale once again offers great opportunities

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Keeneland April horses of racing age sale is set for Friday night. What is not quite set is the final catalog – and alongside it, the makeup of the buying bench.
Keeneland released an initial catalog of 111 entries earlier this month for the sale, which follows the closing-day card of the spring race meet. First post on the card has been moved up to 12:30 p.m. to accommodate the sale; the final race is scheduled to go off at 5:09 p.m., with the sale set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
“The auction is well placed on the calendar, because in many ways, the summer racing season begins when the final race of our spring meet is run,” Keeneland vice president of sales Tony Lacy said in a release. “Buyers will find tremendous opportunities to add to their stables at this sale on the eve of Kentucky Derby week.”

Plans for horses of racing age can change rapidly as they continue to train and race. Connections often enter by early sale deadlines to keep their options open and later choose to withdraw; on the other side of the coin, they may seek an opportunity to strike while the iron is hot with a recent winner. Responding to this, Keeneland has found great success with dynamic catalogs for its horses of racing age sales in November and April, reviewing and accepting supplemental entries even in the final countdown to sales.
As of Tuesday morning, there were 21 additional supplements into the Keeneland April catalog – but also 45 outs from the entire group. The numbers could continue to change right up until sale time. In 2022, Summer Anthem won his maiden on Keeneland’s closing-day card, was added to the catalog, and walked down the hill to the sale pavilion to fetch $150,000 that evening.
The final makeup of the catalog will also determine the final makeup of the buying bench, as various operations seize opportunities based on what is available, for everything from young prospects to breeding stock. Examples of that variety can be seen in the two most recent toppers at this sale. The presence of the stakes-winning mare Acting Out in the 2022 catalog led the Farish family to consider the future, seeking her out for $600,000 as a broodmare prospect. She was in Horse of the Year Flightline’s first book in 2023 at the family’s Lane’s End Farm. Last year, younger racing stock was a highlight, as Commissioner Dan was supplemented to the sale less than a week after winning his debut at Keeneland. He was purchased for a sale-topping $500,000 by Saudi Arabian interests, which have become major players at U.S. sales, seeking out horses who fit that circuit.
Thus far, this year’s sale appears to be dominated by lightly raced young stock. More than half of the current catalog – 68 entrants – are 3-year-olds or younger with four or fewer starts. A round of supplements announced Tuesday morning included the 3-year-olds Low Country Magic and Save the Trees, Keeneland debut winners on April 17 and April 19, respectively.
Among older, established horses, the racing or broodmare prospects include Dana’s Beauty, last-out winner of the Latonia Stakes at Turfway Park. Millionaire graded stakes-winning geldings Smile Happy and Tiz the Bomb are cataloged as racing prospects; graded stakes winner Dynamic One is cataloged as a racing or stallion prospect; and graded stakes winner Wit is cataloged as a stallion prospect only.
With Commissioner Dan leading the way, last year’s Keeneland April sale finished with 67 horses sold for a gross of $6,743,000. The single-session average price was $100,642, an increase of 9 percent from the 2022 edition. The median jumped 40 percent, to $70,000.
