Katie M’Lady cruised to an easy front-running victory in the $75,000 Romacaca Handicap on Thursday at Hawthorne Race Course.
Hitting peak form at age 5, Katie M’Lady won her third straight race and first open stakes race while running her career mark to a fine 12-7-4-0.
Katie M’lady’s good speed got her an easy lead under Julio Felix and none of her nine rivals ever came close to the mare. She Can’t Sing, the 123-pound starting highweight, raced a couple lengths off Katie M’lady through fractions of 23.29 and 46.42, but Katie M’lady quickened away from her at the three-furlong marker and widened her lead through the homestretch, posting a 4 1/4-length victory.
Wave of Goodness ran late for a distant second, finishing a neck in front of third-place Trail Ridge Road. Katie M’lady, carrying 122 pounds, was timed in a quick 1:40.72 for 1 1/16 miles over a fast-playing, firm turf course and paid $5 as the favorite.
Michele Boyce trains Katie M’lady and is part of the group Cherrywood Racing II and Oak Rock Racing, who bred and own Katie M’lady. By Dominus out of Katie the Lady, by Lost Soldier, Katie M’Lady is the third generation in her family to reside in the Boyce barn.
