OZONE PARK, N.Y. -- Jockeys Katie Davis and Joey Martinez were each sanctioned by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority for violations of the riding crop rule. Davis on Thursday served the first day of a three-day suspension resulting from her third crop violation within a 180-day period. On Dec. 14, Davis struck Russian Realm with the whip seven times, one more than permitted under HISA rules. Russian Realm finished second in the race in question. Davis also incurred penalties for the same crop violation on Sept. 20 and 21, in races at Aqueduct. Under HISA rules, Davis was suspended three days _-- Jan. 2-4 -- and was fined $1,500 for having three violations in a 180-day period. Since racing resumed at Aqueduct on Dec. 27, Davis had won three races from 10 mounts. Jockey Joey Martinez was suspended one day. Sunday. and fined $500 for using the crop seven times on Grey Ace, who finished fourth in a maiden race at Aqueduct on Dec. 28. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
