Katie Davis enjoys week to remember

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – On and off the track, jockey Katie Davis enjoyed a pretty nice week.
On track, Davis won two races as she attempts a comeback after being away 16 months preparing for and following the birth of her first child. On Dec. 1, Davis won a maiden $75,000 claiming race aboard Narciso Dali for trainer Amira Chichakly. On Dec. 3, Davis won a $16,000 claimer on Diva Banker for trainer Ray Handal.

On Dec. 2, she and her husband and fellow jockey, Trevor McCarthy, closed on a new house in Elmont, N.Y. McCarthy is sidelined with a broken collarbone and pelvic injury that will keep him out of the saddle until at least February.
Davis, 30, is trying to crack into the New York colony at a time when most of the high-profile riders are heading south for the winter. While the majority of her 257 career wins have come in the Mid-Atlantic region, she is hoping to make inroads with New York trainers that will enable her to stay riding here.
As she prepared for her comeback, she galloped horses primarily for Handal.
“I’m getting to know a lot of people here in New York,” Davis said. “I don’t have that connection with everybody yet. My goal is to stay positive, ride smart races, give the horses the best opportunity they can get.”
