ARCADIA, Calif. – There is plenty of room for new faces in a shallow female grass division at Santa Anita, where two recent arrivals are entered in the Grade 3 Santa Ana Stakes on Saturday. Kathynmarissa, a 4-year-old facing older stakes fillies for the first time, and Starry Heavens, a 5-year-old import making her U.S. debut, will try to knock off locals Mrs. Astor and Mahina in the 1 1/4-mile Santa Ana. Eight are entered in the $100,000 Santa Ana, in which Mrs. Astor seeks her third straight graded victory and Mahina enters off back-to-back runner-up finishes in stakes The outsiders are Lady Claypoole, Omaha Girl, and Big Hug. Sakura Blossom will scratch and run in a second-level allowance on Monday, leaving seven runners in the Santa Ana. The Santa Ana is race 8 on a 10-race card that begins with a carryover of $40,549 in the pick six after the bet went unsolved Friday. The pick six begins in race 5 (post: 3:08 p.m. Pacific).   :: Playing Santa Anita? Get the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Rick Dutrow trains Kathynmarissa, who uncorked a bold, mid-race move under jockey Frankie Dettori in the American Oaks by speeding from 10th to third on the backstretch. Dutrow said Dettori “felt he had to make a move when he did. He saw where the horse to beat [She Feels Pretty] was sitting and if he just sits and sits, he’s going to be second. He took a chance to try and win the race.” Kathynmarissa was second best in an effort that extended a string of performances that includes a runner-up finish in the Grade 2 Saratoga Oaks and a win in the $1.6 million Dueling Grounds Oaks at Kentucky Downs. Kathynmarissa has won 3 of 9 for owner Michael Dubb. A challenge Kathynmarissa must overcome is her habitual slow starts. “She always breaks a step slow and to be running with the good horses you can’t give up anything,” Dutrow said. “Maybe the outside post will help her beak a little better.” Starry Heavens will make her U.S. debut for trainer Phil D’Amato after winning 3 of 16 in Europe. Though she did not place in four tries against Group 3 company overseas, Starry Heavens might be a better mare in the United States, and she has trained like it. “She’s training lights out and needs to run,” D’Amato said. “Antonio Fresu has been breezing her from the get-go, he really likes her and thinks that she’ll run all day.” Starry Heavens won at 1 1/4 miles and 1 5/16 miles but has not raced since July. “I have her about as fit as I can get her,” D’Amato said, acknowledging workouts only get you so far. “We’re going to run against horses that are already in form, but it’s a good starting point.” Starry Heavens is listed at 5-1 on the morning line. Mrs. Astor, listed as the 5-2 second choice, recently scored Grade 3 wins in the Red Carpet at Del Mar and Robert J. Frankel at Santa Anita. Jonathan Thomas trains Mrs. Astor, whose rider is Umberto Rispoli. Mahina, runner-up by a nose to Mrs. Astor two back, is trained by Paddy Gallagher and will have Hector Berrios aboard. – additional reporting by David Grening :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
