Kathryn the Wise eyes Barbara Fritchie

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Coming off her monster 10 3/4-length victory against New York-breds in Saturday’s $100,000 La Verdad Stakes at Aqueduct, Kathryn the Wise is likely to make her next start against open company in the Grade 3, $250,000 Barbara Fritchie Handicap at Laurel Park on Feb. 16, trainer Chad Brown said Monday.
Kathryn the Wise earned a career-best 102 Beyer Speed Figure for her victory in the La Verdad. It was her fourth win from six career starts, but first victory since she won the Critical Eye at Belmont in May 2017. Ankle issues kept the 6-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo away from the races for more than 16 months.
“Obviously, she’s had her share of setbacks, but she always had a lot of talent,” Brown said Monday from Florida. “It was nice to see her healthy and run to her capability. The Barbara Fritchie is something we’d take a look at.”
The Barbara Fritchie is run at seven furlongs.
◗ Syndergaard, recent nose winner of a New York-bred allowance, worked a solid half-mile in 48.00 seconds, his last quarter in 23.51 seconds, Monday morning over the Belmont Park training track. He is expected to run next in Saturday’s $100,000 Say Florida Sandy Stakes for statebreds going seven furlongs.
◗ Tax, third in the Grade 2 Remsen on Dec. 1, worked a half-mile in 48.77 seconds in company with recent maiden winner Miss Marilyn. Tax is preparing for a start in the Grade 3, $250,000 Withers at Aqueduct on Feb. 2.
