A year ago this weekend, Kathleen O. won the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks to run her career record to 4 for 4 and stamp herself a major player for the Kentucky Oaks. One year later, Kathleen O. is looking to find her way back to the winner’s circle, something her connections hope to accomplish in Sunday’s $100,000 Top Flight Stakes at Aqueduct. Kathleen O., who will race with blinkers on for the first time, is listed as the 4-5 morning-line favorite in the Top Flight, which goes as race 7 on an eight-race card that begins at 1:20 p.m. Kathleen O. has raced only three times since her Gulfstream Park Oaks win. She finished fifth, four lengths behind winner Secret Oath in last year’s Kentucky Oaks. After trainer Shug McGaughey put her away for the summer, Kathleen O. came back in the Grade 3 Comely at Aqueduct in November and finished second, beaten a half-length by Sixtythreecaliber. Kathleen O. didn’t race again until February, when she was beaten 1 3/4 lengths while second to Classy Edition in the Grade 3 Royal Delta at Gulfstream Park. “I thought she ran fine,” McGaughey said of the Royal Delta. “A horse got on the lead and we couldn’t catch her.” :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. As for adding blinkers, McGaughey said, “We thought she was getting lost in a couple of her races. We’ll see if the blinkers make a difference.” Javier Castellano, aboard for all seven of Kathleen O.’s starts, is in from Florida to ride. Like McGaughey, trainer Todd Pletcher has won the Top Flight four times. Sunday, Pletcher sends out Falconet and Let Her Inspire U in the 1 1/8-mile race. Falconet finished two lengths behind Kathleen O. when running fourth in the Comely. She bounced back with a solid two-length victory in the Ladies Stakes in the mud on New Year’s Day. Both of those races were run at 1 1/8 miles. Sent off the 3-5 favorite Feb. 18 in the Heavenly Prize Invitational, a one-turn mile, Falconet finished second, 6 1/4 lengths behind the Bill Mott-trained Frost Point, who is pointing to the Grade 3, $300,000 Doubledogdare at Keeneland on April 21. “That filly of Mott’s just outran her,” Pletcher said. “Getting back around two turns will probably be helpful.” Let Her Inspire U, who won the Empire Distaff for New York-breds last fall and a second-level allowance last out, was entered in here when a third-level allowance failed to fill. Timeless Journey, also a New York-bred, has won three of her last four starts, including an open second-level allowance going 1 1/8 miles two back and the Biogio’s Rose Stakes for New York-breds on March 12. Trainer Ray Handal said he did not want to wait for the Critical Eye at Belmont Park on May 29 to run Timeless Journey back, so he opted for this spot. Completing the field are Mommasgottarun, a second-level allowance winner going a mile last out; Sweet Willemina, third in the Ladies Stakes two back; and Easy to Bless, a sprinter who is trying 1 1/8 miles for the first time. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
