OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Kappa Kappa passed her graded stakes debut when she came back on after getting overtaken in the stretch by Vodka With a Twist to win the Grade 2 Raven Run Stakes seven weeks ago at Keeneland. Sunday, Kappa Kappa will get tested for stamina as she attempts 1 1/8 miles for the first time in the Grade 3, $200,000 Comely Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct, the final graded stakes race of the year on the New York Racing Association circuit. Kappa Kappa, a daughter of Omaha Beach trained by Butch Reid, is 3 for 4 in her career. Her lone defeat came in her second start and her lone try around two turns, when she finished second in a one-mile allowance race at Parx Racing. “It’s a little bit of an experiment but based in fact,” Reid said. “She’s been around two turns before and didn’t run bad. I think she got caught a little bit by surprise that day. We’re just trying to see how next year is going to set up for us. The way she trains and the way she acts, I don’t think distance will be a problem.” Kappa Kappa certainly was game in her Raven Run victory. She dueled three wide and was passed at least a half-length by Vodka With a Twist at the eighth pole before battling back to win by a head under John Velazquez. “Johnny said when she made the lead, she twitched her ears back and forth and waited on horses a little bit,” Reid said. “But when they came to her, she dug right back in. That’s another thing that’s given us confidence to go two turns with her.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Fully Subscribed is coming back a month after she won the Grade 2 Mother Goose Stakes by 4 1/2 lengths over Drexel Hill, the Kentucky Oaks runner-up. Shortly after that win, trainer Chad Brown hinted at keeping Fully Subscribed going since she only had three races this year. Yes It Tiz jumps into graded stakes company for the first time for trainer Brad Cox. After making her first three starts on turf, Yes It Tiz has won two straight on dirt, the first one being an allowance that was originally scheduled for turf. Both wins, which came at this 1 1/8-mile distance, came after Cox removed blinkers. “We were trying to get her to settle a little bit,” Cox said. “I thought it was a good move to take the blinkers off her. I thought it helped her relax a little bit early on in the race and get her into a rhythm.” Manny Franco rides Yes It Tiz from post 7 in this eight-horse field. Ourdaydreaminggirl finished fifth in the Mother Goose, but she ran a dynamite third, beaten just a neck by Clicquot, in the Grade 1 Cotillion in her previous race. Quietside won the Grade 3 Honeybee and Grade 2 Fantasy at Oaklawn during the winter before running sixth in the Kentucky Oaks. Coming off a six-month layoff, Quietside was beaten 16 1/2 lengths by Kappa Kappa in the Raven Run. Valtellina, trained by Ray Handal, comes off a victory in the Empire Distaff for New York-breds, while trainer Todd Pletcher sends out both Noticeable and Ruth. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
