ETOBICOKE, Ontario -- Graded stakes winners Kalik and Mission of Joy, along with the reigning Canadian champion male 2-year-old Philip My Dear, are among the 70 Canadian-bred 3-year-olds that remain eligible for the $1 million King’s Plate following an interim payment due June 7. Trained by Eclipse Award winner Chad Brown, Kalik burst into Plate contention June 3 with a front-running score in Grade 2 Pennine Ridge on the grass at Belmont, for which he got a 90 Beyer Speed Figure. Mission of Joy, another turf specialist, took the Grade 3 Florida Oaks at Tampa in March for trainer Graham Motion. She went on to finish a troubled third in the Grade 2 Edgewood at Churchill, where she won her last outing with a 90 Beyer in the Grade 3 Regret on June 3. Philip My Dear, a multiple turf stakes winner under the guidance of trainer Kevin Attard, makes his season debut in Sunday’s Queenston Stakes at Woodbine. Enjoythesilent, a recent maiden winner for Attard, is the lone Plate supplement who wasn’t originally nominated to the Canadian Triple Crown. The 164th running of the Plate, North America’s oldest annually run stakes, is set for Aug. 20. As per tradition, the prestigious race’s name was changed from the Queen’s Plate following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last year and the subsequent coronation of King Charles III. :: Get ready for summer racing with a DRF Formulator Quarterly PP plan Mission of Joy heads the 32 Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies that remain eligible for the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks on July 23.
