Kalgoorlie a winner in return

Southern California raider Kalgoorlie, making his first start since February, proved victorious in Saturday's $50,000 Walter R. Cluer Handicap at Turf Paradise.

Owned by Three Sisters Thoroughbreds and trained by Mike Chambers, Kalgoorlie dogged pacesetter Nosir from the start in the mile turf event, went after that rival into the lane, and finally wore down that foe and edged past to win by three-quarters of a length under Ry Eikleberry. Nosir held gamely for second, a half-length in front of a fast-closing Billy Allen, who was third in the field reduced to five by the scratch of Tony the Pony. Bingham, the 6-5 favorite, ran fourth.

Kalgoorlie ran the mile on firm turf in 1:35.62 and paid $8 as the second choice. The winner's share of $30,000 pushes his career bankroll to $99,203 from 3 wins in 10 starts.
