Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Madone will likely run once more before Breeders' Cup

The undefeated filly Madone won her stakes debut in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sunday and may earn a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 6 at Keeneland pending a stakes appearance on Oct. 4 at Santa Anita.
Trainer Simon Callaghan said earlier this week that the $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita is planned for Madone.
“Most likely, that is what we’re going to do,” he said.
A successful race in the Surfer Girl would lead to a start in the Breeders’ Cup.
Ridden by Flavien Prat, Madone closed from eighth in a field of 11 into a slow pace to win the one-mile Juvenile Fillies Turf by a half-length as the 8-5 favorite. She emerged between horses in the final quarter-mile to reach the front in the last furlong.
“I thought she overcame a few things to get it done,” Callaghan said. “When the gap came, she bounced through it.”
Owned by Kaleem Shah, Madone is by the Medaglia d’Oro stallion Vancouver and was purchased for $125,000 at a 2-year-olds in training sale earlier this year. Madone won her debut in a maiden special weight race at a mile on turf July 31 at Del Mar.
The Santa Anita autumn meeting begins Sept. 19. There is no daytime Thoroughbred racing in Southern California this weekend.
