OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Her better races may be going longer, but in the modest field of 3-year-old fillies assembled for Saturday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Sands Point Stakes at Aqueduct, Justdeny might not come up short. Coming out of a second-place finish behind Beautiful Love in the Grade 3 Jockey Club Oaks going 1 3/8 miles here last month, Justdeny shortens up to 1 1/8 miles in the Sands Point. The field of eight entered to run on the inner turf course has combined to win just two stakes. “I’m taking a shot because it’s a Grade 2 with no stars in it,” trainer Danny Gargan said. “She’s run well short, she’s gotten better going longer. I think she’s gotten better with age too. If she can go forward at all she’s got a shot to win.” Gargan took a shot with Justdeny in the Jockey Club Oaks and was rewarded with a graded stakes placing and a $70,000 payday. There was a runway speed horse in the Jockey Club Oaks, which explains why Justdeny was so far back. While she was outfinished by Beautiful Love, Justdeny held second by a nose over Caldwell Luvs Gold. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match + FREE All Access PPs! She twice finished second in graded stakes during the winter in Florida and after a third-place finish in the Christiana Stakes at Delaware, Style Points dead-heated with Deep Satin to win the Virginia Oaks on Sept. 7 at Colonial. Style Points goes out for trainer Christophe Clement, who has won 11 stakes with 27 starters over the last six weeks. Mo Fox Givin could be live at a price for trainer Mark Casse. A daughter of Mo Town, Mo Fox Givin finished second in the Tepin Stakes at Churchill Downs in June. Trained by Ron Moquett then, Mo Fox Givin has made her last two starts for Casse. She was only beaten two lengths in the Grade 3 Pucker Up at Ellis Park in August before finishing last of 12 in the Dueling Grounds Oaks. Mo Fox Givin didn’t have a clean trip in the Dueling Grounds Oaks at Kentucky Downs, and there are plenty of horses who haven’t run well at Kentucky Downs that bounce back at a more conventional track. Trainer Chad Brown, a five-time winner of the Sands Point, sends out the pair of Spaliday and Shade of Pale. Spaliday, a daughter of More Than Ready, won the Boiling Springs at Monmouth in June before finishing fourth behind stablemate Grayosh in the Grade 2 Lake Placid. Spaliday was last, nine lengths back, in the Lake Placid before falling just 1 1/2 lengths short. Shade of Pale, a daughter of Dermachelier, is coming off a maiden win here Sept. 15. Macanga, who set a runaway pace before finishing ninth in the Jockey Club Oaks, and Courbe complete the field on turf. Audacious and Just Music are entered to run on the main track. The Sands Point is carded as the fifth race on an 11-race card that begins at 12:10 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
