LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Even with run-of-the-mill racing, it’s not all that often you’ll see an eight-horse field with six of them exiting a common race – but that’s the case with the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Just One Time rallied to win the April 9 Madison at Keeneland, defeating five of her Derby City opponents, and bettors will have to decide Saturday whether to expect a similar result. Just One Time, with Flavien Prat riding again, will break from post 2 in the 36th Derby City, a Derby Day fixture that leads off an all-graded-stakes pick five ending with the Derby (races 8-12). The 4-year-old chestnut filly is 6 for 7, including wins in both the Grade 2 Inside Information and Grade 1 Madison after being turned over to Brad Cox following her final race last year at 3. :: Get Kentucky Derby Betting Strategies for exclusive wager recommendations, contender profiles, pedigree analysis, and more “She knows how to win,” said Cox. “She bounced out of the Madison in great shape and we’re looking forward to another big effort.” Just One Time, the only Pennsylvania-bred in a lineup otherwise filled with Kentucky-breds, will break from post 2 in the Derby City, which goes at the same seven-furlong distance as the Madison. Prat timed the filly’s run to perfection at Keeneland, as she was along in the final 70 yards to reel in another come-from-behind type in Bell’s the One, winning by three-quarters of a length. Bell’s the One (post 6, Corey Lanerie to ride on Saturday) won the Derby City in September 2020 in one of the tightest non-dead-heat finishes you’ll ever see. Bell’s the One made seven starts in 2021, including a fourth-place finish behind Gamine in this race last May. Her runner-up finish in the Madison followed a five-month layoff, although trainer Neil Pessin said: “It wasn’t an issue of her needing the race. Corey might’ve pulled the trigger a little early, but you never know about that until after it happens.” “She’s come back to train very well and we’re sitting on go,” he added. “We’re respectful of all but fearful of none.” Quite a bit of early speed is signed on here, with Lady Rocket, Kimari, and Edgeway all capable of making the front down the backside. Lady Rocket, a second Cox trainee, also has speed, but she was to be scratched to run Sunday at Belmont Park in the Ruffian. Kimari (post 4, Joel Rosario), winner of the 2021 Madison for Wesley Ward, is making the third start of her form cycle after finishing third as the Madison favorite. Edgeway (post 7, John Velazquez) ships in from California in peak form for John Sadler, having won a pair of Santa Anita stakes after finishing second to divisional champion Ce Ce in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint in November. Once they all turn for home, Just One Time and Bell’s the One will be among those looking to gain on the front-runners, along with Obligatory, one of just two entered here (with Edgeway) that didn’t run in the Madison. Obligatory (post 5, Jose Ortiz) is 2 for 2 at Churchill, including a flashy score in the Grade 3 Chilukki in November for owner-breeder Juddmonte Farms. :: Kentucky Derby Headquarters: Get the latest news, info on contenders, past performances, picks, and more  Trainer Bill Mott said he thought of running Obligatory in the Madison, but that she had run hard in winning the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie at Gulfstream Park in March, and he wanted to keep her fresh for the Derby City. “Clearly she’s shown a fondness for the distance and the racetrack here,” said Mott. Rounding out the cast are longshots Four Graces (post 8, Julien Leparoux) and Center Aisle (post 3, Tyler Gaffalione), the respective fifth and eighth finishers in the Madison. Post time is 2:48 p.m. Eastern for the Derby City Distaff, which had been known as the Humana Distaff from 1995-2019 prior to a sponsorship change. - additional reporting by David Grening
