Up Jumps a Monster finds good spot to end losing streak
Up Jumps a Monster looked like he was going to be the favorite for the Grade 3 Canadian Derby in 2012 after winning four races in a row to begin his career for trainer Rob Chabot. His fourth win came in the $50,000 Ky Alta in his first try with stakes winners. However, he finished a distant second to Balooga Bull in the Manitoba Derby in his next start, and he hasn’t won in 15 starts since.
Chabot may have found the right spot for Up Jumps a Monster to get back to the winner’s circle in a $25,000 optional-claiming race for 3-year-olds and up that headlines a nine-race card at Northlands on Saturday.
He’s certainly no cinch, and Chabot also could win the one-mile race with High Test, who is stretching out to a middle distance for just the third time.
Up Jumps a Monster looks like the one to beat, though. He set the pace and held on to finish second going 1 1/16 miles at the same level in his latest start Aug. 27, and he figures to move forward in his second start following a short layoff. Ruben Lara retains the mount.
KEY CONTENDERS
Up Jumps a Monster (Last 3 Beyers: 70-45-59)
◗ After running a couple of dull races, he dropped to this level and ran a much-improved race with Lara riding him for the first time.
◗ He could take a big step forward with a solid race behind him, and it will also be the second straight race in which he won’t wear blinkers.
Pakal (Last 3 Beyers: 36-59-65)
◗ He had a wide trip when he ran a dull race as the favorite in his first start after being claimed by trainer Greg Tracy. However, he came back to work an exceptional five furlongs in 58 seconds Sept. 6, and leading rider Rico Walcott will be aboard for the first time. According to DRF Formulator, Walcott has won with 41 percent of his mounts for Tracy at the current meet.
◗ DRF FORMULATOR FACT: Tracy has a 44 percent strike rate at Northlands over the past five years with horses making their second start after being claimed.

High Test (Last 3 Beyers: 62-75-74)
◗ He might be a bit suspect at the distance, but he could be heard from late if Up Jumps a Monster and Pakal hook up early.
