Judicial back where she started for sprint allowance

Barbara D. Livingston Judicial, trained by Mark Glatt, is a contender on turf or dirt in Friday's feature.

Judicial returns to Emerald Downs, where she likely will be favored in a first-level allowance race with a $30,000 claiming option that will serve as Saturday’s feature. The six-furlong dash for fillies and mares drew six horses and goes as race 7 on an eight-race card that begins at 2 p.m. Pacific.

Judicial began her career in 2017 at Emerald with trainer Tom Wenzel, finishing third in a maiden special race late in the meet on Sept. 17. Being a California-bred, it made sense to move her to the Golden State, where she was eligible for bonus money. The move paid off, as she finished a fast-closing second in a maiden special weight race for Cal-breds at Santa Anita on Dec. 31. She won her next outing at the same level going 5 1/2 furlongs on dirt at Santa Anita.

The versatile 4-year-old, who is reunited with Wenzel, seems to handle any surface. In two starts at Santa Anita this year, she finished a close third on the downhill turf course and, after dueling early, held on well to finish second in the mud in a $20,000 optional claimer with first-level allowance conditions for Cal-breds on Feb. 15.

Judicial also showed an affinity for the local surface when she worked a bullet five furlongs last Saturday. She will break from post 4 with Jorge Carreno riding.

KEY CONTENDERS

Judicial, by Tribal Rule
Last 3 Beyers: 72-73-73

◗ Her recent Beyer Speed Figures stand out, and with two sharp local works, she appears primed for a big effort coming off the layoff. According to Daily Racing Form’s Formulator, over the past five years Wenzel has a 43 percent strike rate and a $3.74 ROI with horses coming back in 61 to 180 days.

Jerre to Carrie, by Congrats
Last 3 Beyers: 62-54-73

◗ A seven-time winner with $121,814 in earnings, she rallied to finish third going 5 1/2 furlongs at this level in her first start at the meet and is eligible to move forward with a race behind her.

◗ The Kay Cooper trainee does her best running late, and there could be an honest pace to set her up.

Papa Mambo, by Papa Clem
Last 3 Beyers: 65-66-66

◗ Trained by Joe Toye, she returns to Emerald, where she has five wins from six starts.

◗ In her most recent race, at Turf Paradise, she finished third to B C Z Middleton, a four-time stakes winner with two stakes wins at Emerald.

◗ She will break from the rail, which has not been the place to be in six-furlong races, going 0 for 5 at the meet.
