The Judge Sez Who gives trainer a double

Jean Raftery The Judge Sez Who eases to the wire a 1 3/4-length victor over favored Best of the Rest in the Grade 3, $100,000 Fred W. Hooper Handicap at Calder on Saturday.

MIAMI - The Judge Sez Who capped off a memorable day for trainer Milt Wolfson when he rallied to a 1 3/4-length victory over 8-5 favorite Best of the Rest in the Grade 3, with Stormy Frolic earlier on the card.

The Judge Sez Who rallied off a hotly contested pace in the 1 1/8-mile Hooper. Jockey Cornelio Velasquez waited until the three-eighths pole before making his move aboard The Judge Sez Who, who swung wide into the stretch and ran down Best of the Rest.

Best of the Rest, just off the early leaders after stumbling at the break, took the lead approaching the quarter pole, but couldn't hold off the winner's late rally.

Dancing Guy finished third, another four lengths behind Best of the Rest, who has now been the beaten favorite in three of the last four renewals of the Hooper.

Booklet, the 122-pound highweight in a field of eight 3-year-olds and up, forced the pace, took a brief lead on the far turn, and weakened to finish fourth. He was followed by Woodmoon, Sir Bear, Cool N Collective, and High Ideal.

A son of Judge TC and Mandy Mack, The Judge Sez Who paid $9.20 after covering nine furlongs in 1:50.53 over a fast track. The Hooper was his second Grade 3 win of the year. He also captured the Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park.

The Judge Sez Who and Booklet were the only 3-year-olds in the field.

The Judge Sez Who will now be pointed for Gulfstream Park's $1 million Sunshine Millions Classic on Jan. 25. Best of the Rest, Booklet, and Sir Bear are also expected to run in the Sunshine Classic.

"The four weeks between races should set him up perfectly," said Wolfson.

Stormy Frolic: A year between wins

Stormy Frolic went 362 days between victories but broke her slump in high style with an easy 5 1/2-length triumph over Small Promises in the Stage Door Betty.

Stormy Frolic had been winless in nine starts since a 6 3/4-length tally in the Tropical Park Oaks on New Year's Day.

On Saturday Stormy Frolic raced on the main track for the first time since Sept. 7, and the 3-year-old daughter of Summer Squall stalked the early pace of Small Promises and took command down the backstretch of the 1 1/16-mile Stage Door Betty.

Small Promises and entrymate Tuff Chick were the surprising even-money favorites in the Stage Door Betty. Small Promises finished a length clear of Redoubled Miss, who was third.

Rounding out the order of finish were Coolbythepool, Tuff Chick, Two Item Limit, and Sara's Success.

Stormy Frolic paid $27.60. She ran the distance in 1:44.08 under jockey Jose Santos.

Recalling Stormy Frolic's Tropical Park Oaks victory to start the year, Wolfson said: "It's been a hell of a day and a hell of a year from start to finish. We began the year winning a stakes with Stormy Frolic and finished it winning two stakes today."
