Joy Boy succeeds in third try at Bosselman/Fonner Stakes
The third time was the charm for Joy Boy.
Joy Boy won the $75,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes in his third start in the race on Saturday, when he turned back a bid from Diamond Joe for a two-length win at Fonner Park. It was another half-length back in third to favorite Doctor Peter.
Joy Boy ($6.80), who ran third in the Bosselman in 2013 and fourth in the race in 2014, won the first stakes race of his career Saturday. He dictated the terms from the start, setting fractions of 24.40 seconds for the opening quarter, 48 seconds for the half-mile, and 1:13.80 for six furlongs. Joy Boy withstood a stretch challenge from Diamond Joe and went on to cover 1 1/16 miles on a muddy track in 1:46.40.
Jake Olesiak was aboard Joy Boy for trainer Kellyn Gorder.
Joy Boy, a 7-year-old son of Tribal Rule who races for TK Stables, earned $45,000 for his win in the Bosselman. He has now won 11 of 36 starts and $455,377.
Tranarchy ($27.60) was a wire-to-wire, 3 1/2-length winner of the $25,000 Fonner Park Special.
