Journeyman Iggy Puglisi being evaluated after pre-race spill
ARCADIA, Calif. – Veteran jockey Iggy Puglisi was being evaluated at Arcadia Methodist Hospital, across the street from Santa Anita, late Saturday after complaining of shoulder soreness following a spill preceding race 6 on Saturday, according to Darrell Haire, the Western Regional Manager of the Jockeys' Guild.
Puglisi fell heavily to the turf when his mount, Lovely Finish, reared up just as she was about to loaded in the gate for the one-mile grass race for maiden California-bred fillies. Puglisi landed on the turf behind the gate. He was transported in an ambulance to the track's first-aid department, then was moved to the hospital.
Lovely Finish was scratched. She had not raced since December 2018.
Lovely Finish, a 5-year-old mare, is the same horse who caused injuries to Gary Stevens at Del Mar in November 2018 that hastened his retirement. She was burned in the tragic San Luis Rey Downs fire in December 2017.
