ARCADIA, Calif. – Journalism, the sharp winner of the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity last month, is likely to have his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita on March 1. Trainer Michael McCarthy said Sunday that Journalism is expected to have his first workout since the Dec. 14 Los Alamitos Futurity on “Thursday or Friday” this week, later than expected. “He got sick after he was vaccinated,” McCarthy said, detailing the lack of recent workouts. The $300,000 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles is one of California’s top prep races for the Triple Crown and leads to the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby at 1 1/8 miles on April 5. Owned by the partnership of Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Elayne Stables 5 LLC, and Robert LaPenta, Journalism has won 2 of 3 starts and earned $158,880. After finishing third in his first start in a six-furlong maiden race at Santa Anita on Oct. 27, Journalism won his two-turn debut by 2 1/2 lengths in a one-mile maiden race at Del Mar on Nov. 17. :: Playing Santa Anita? In the Los Alamitos Futurity at 1 1/16 miles, Journalism was always near the front and won by 3 1/2 lengths over Getaway Car, who was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar on Nov. 1. ◗ The McCarthy-trained Bullard worked a half-mile in 47.80 seconds at Santa Anita on Saturday, his first work since he finished third by six lengths behind Barnes in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs at Santa Anita on Jan. 4.
