Joseph looking cool as Haulin Ice romps in Azalea

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has won five of the last six stakes run at Gulfstream Park, with his latest success story Haulin Ice in the $95,000 Azalea on Saturday.

She pulled way by 9 1/2 lengths to win over Miuccia, who finished second in the seven-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies. It was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third to Joseph-trained Candy Gray. A third starter for the barn, R Harper Rose, set a pressured pace and finished fifth in her first start since May.

Joseph’s stakes tear at Gulfstream began June 15. During that period he’s also won stakes at Saratoga, Delaware Park, and Lone Star Park.

“Thank God the horses ran well, and credit obviously to the horses and the team,” Joseph said.

Haulin Ice ($8.60) settled in fifth in the Azalea, racing off fractions of 22.28 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.05 for the half-mile. She advanced three wide on the final turn, moved to the lead into the stretch, and pulled away in the lane to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:22.63.

Emisael Jaramillo was aboard the daughter of Coal Front.

Haulin Ice was a private purchase following the Oaklawn meet in May and now races for the partnership of C2 Racing, Miller Racing, Paul Braverman and Timothy Pinch.

Haulin Ice won her first stakes in the Azalea. She is now 4 for 7 for earnings of $353,300.
