After sending out the first three finishers earlier in the meet in the Roar Stakes, leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. will try to do himself one better when he starts a four-headed monster topped by Moonlite Strike and Lauda Speed on Saturday at Gulfstream Park in the $75,000 Carry Back Stakes. The seven-furlong dash lured a field of nine 3-year-olds that also includes Big Thorn, Isolate, Real Talk, and Raison d’Air. Moonlite Strike and Lauda Speed finished first and second in the 6 1/2-furlong Roar on May 15, easily defeating their more highly regarded stablemate Collaborate, who checked in third as the 2-5 favorite. Collaborate flattered the race by returning to post an easy allowance win in his next start. Moonlite Strike and Lauda Speed will be joined in the Carry Back by stablemates Awesome Gerry and Twelve Volt Man. “Initially, Lauda Speed and Twelve Volt Man were supposed to run in a mile handicap, which never filled,” Joseph explained. “I have no other place to run them, so we’ll see where they’re at. Moonlite Strike and Awesome Gerry were always being pointed for this race.” Moonlite Strike ran the race of his life while equipped with blinkers for the second time in the Roar. He stalked the early pace before drawing away to a convincing 3 1/4-length victory, for which he received a career-best 81 Beyer Speed Figure. Lauda Speed also raced forwardly and was easily second best in the Roar. In March, Lauda Speed finished third in the Hutcheson during the Gulfstream Park championship meet. Awesome Gerry returns locally after a series of races out of town, including a sixth-place finish in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby in March and a third-place effort against high-level allowance company at Churchill Downs in May. Awesome Gerry has been working up a storm of late, turning in a bullet 45-second half-mile in company at the Palm Meadows training center on July 3. Twelve Volt Man followed a hard-fought debut win going six furlongs on April 10 with an easy four-length entry-level allowance victory stretching to a mile on May 21. He, too, has turned in a series of big works since his last outing, including a pair of bullet five-furlong drills at Palm Meadows. “I thought Collaborate was the best horse going into the Roar,” said Joseph. “He obviously disappointed, but Moonlite Strike really stepped up that day, and seven furlongs should be perfect for both him and Lauda Speed. Twelve Volt Man improved a lot in his second start. I’m not sure what was behind him, class-wise, that day, so we should find out a lot about him on Saturday.” Isolate makes his first start since finishing a tiring third in the Grade 3 Nashua at Aqueduct in November. He is one of two horses trainer Kathy Ritvo will send out in the Carry Back, both for owner Dean Reeves, along with Raison d’Air, who has won on both turf and dirt. Real Talk showed off his abundant speed to register a gate-to-wire allowance win at six furlongs on June 4 and is expected to show the way once again from the rail while stretching out to seven furlongs. Big Thorn, a statebred stakes winner as a juvenile at Gulfstream Park West, returns locally for the first time since running sixth in the one-mile Mucho Macho Man on Jan. 2.
