ELMONT, N.Y. - Jose Ortiz swept both stakes on Belmont Park’s closing-day program Sunday, capping a sensational season in which he won his first Belmont Park fall meet riding title. Ortiz rallied Ingrassia between horses in the stretch to nip his brother Irad on Fluffy Socks by a nose in the $100,000 Chelsey Flower Stakes over a boggy inner turf course. The first- and second-place finishers are trained by Chad Brown, who won, or shared, his eighth consecutive Belmont fall trainer’s title with 22 victories. One race earlier, Ortiz guided Honor Way to an easy-as-she-pleased 4 1/4-length victory in the $100,000 Pumpkin Pie Stakes for female sprinters. Overall, Ortiz won three races on Sunday’s card, giving him 40 victories for the meet. Jose Lezcano finished second with 28 wins, followed by Luis Saez (23), Junior Alvarado (22), Irad Ortiz (21), and Manny Franco (21). :: Enhance your handicapping with DRF’s Belmont Clocker Report “I’m very happy, the owners and trainers gave me very good opportunities and my agent [Jim Riccio Jr] is doing a terrific job, too,” Ortiz said. Brown won the trainer’s title with 22 wins. He was followed by Christophe Clement (16), Todd Pletcher (15), Mike Maker (14), and Bill Mott (10). Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stables was the leading owner with 13 wins, followed by Mike Repole (7), Three Diamonds Farm (6), and Noda Brothers (5). The latter half of Sunday’s card was run in a driving rain, which made an already soft turf course a bit of a bog and turned the main track into a sea of slop. In the Chelsey Flower, Jose Ortiz had Ingrassia an up-close fourth. Irad Ortiz made a menacing wide move on Fluffy Socks, but in the stretch she drifted out. Jose Ortiz, who looked like he might go outside, dove back to the inside on Ingrassia, collared Caldee and outlasted Fluffy Socks. It was 7 1/4 lengths back to Tic Tic Tic Boom in third. “Irad was thinking I was going to be coming outside when he passed me,” Jose Ortiz said. “I know his tendencies, I ride with him every day, I know he was going to look for me so I went inside and I think I probably won the race right there.” Ingrassia, a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro owned by Don Alberto Stable, covered the 1 1/16 miles over soft ground in 1:52.01 and returned $6.50 as the second choice. In the $80,000 Pumpkin Pie for female sprinters, Ortiz made a three-wide move on Honor Way turning for home and she galloped away from Pacific Gale in the final furlong to win by 4 1/2 lengths. Pacific Gale was second by 3 1/2 lengths over Never Enough Time. Bronx Beauty finished fourth followed by Gotham Gala. Alisio scratched. “It was a small field, I was able to be within two or three lengths,” Ortiz said. “Every time she’s been in that kind of position I know she’s going to run home.” Honor Way, a 6-year-old daughter of Caleb’s Posse, covered the seven furlongs in the slop in 1:22.98 and returned $7.30 to win. It was the first stakes win for Honor Way, who had been in eight different barns in her career and had run in nine previous stakes. Charlton Baker claimed Honor Way for $62,500 for owner Saul Kupferberg in July 2019 and this was her 13th start and fifth win for these connections. Overall, it was the 12th win from 40 career starts for Honor Way, who has now amassed $622,892 in purse earnings. “That’s super for her, she deserved that,” Baker said. “She’s a hard-trying filly whoever trains her. She’s been through five or six different barns and she always performs.”
