DEL MAR, Calif. – Richard Mandella thought Jolie Olimpica was training as though she was sitting on a big race in the Grade 1 Matriarch on Sunday at Del Mar, but a foot bruise this week caused her to not even be entered.

“She’s dead lame,” Mandella said. “She’s got an abscess coming. Another setback.”

Jolie Olimpica has not raced since finishing second to Rushing Fall in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland July 11. Third in that race was Juliet Foxtrot, who is in the Matriarch.

“I thought she had a huge chance off her race at Keeneland,” Mandella said.

Mandella said Jolie Olimpica would now be pointed to the Grade 3, $100,000 Las Cienegas Handicap going six furlongs on turf at Santa Anita Jan. 9. Jolie Olimpica won this year’s Las Cienegas in her first start after arriving from her native Brazil.
