John Lenzini Sr. dead at 80

John Lenzini Sr., a longtime trainer on the New England and Maryland circuits, died Monday in Baltimore at 80.

Lenzini, a native of Pawtucket, R.I., trained horses for 64 years. He continued to be active at Maryland tracks until his retirement early this year. According to Daily Racing Form statistics, Lenzini won 1,020 races from 6,938 starters (14.7 percent) and his runners earned $10,355,177.

Lenzini was the father John "Butch" Lenzini Jr., a successful New York-based trainer, who died at 49 in November 1996.

Lenzini is survived by Mary D. Lenzini, his wife of 55 years; his daughter, Linda Moreau; a sister, Irene Desmarais; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Manning-Heffern Funeral Home, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket. Burial will take place at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.
