Joe G's Payback, Schiff's Corner meet in D.S. ‘Shine' Young Futurity
Joe G’s Payback has natural speed, and her turn of foot should serve her well Friday night when she breaks from the rail in the $75,000 fillies’ division of the D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity at Evangeline Downs.
The race, run over 5 1/2 furlongs, is for 2-year-old fillies bred in Louisiana. It drew a field of eight, including the dominant maiden winner Schiff’s Corner.
Joe G’s Payback was a seven-length maiden special weight winner over Louisiana-breds in her last start June 19 at Evangeline. She broke on top and increased her advantage at each point of call, one start after running second at the same level May 25 at Evangeline.
“I just as soon run from the 1 hole as the 4 or 5 hole,” said Brett Brinkman, who trains Joe G’s Payback. “From Day 1, she’s been a very smart filly. She’s just done everything right.
“Obviously, we’ve got to get away clean, have some position. But she’s been smart enough if she had to catch dirt, I think she’ll catch dirt and she’ll run her race.”
Joe G’s Payback is a daughter of the Grade 2-winning sprinter Flashpoint. Her dam, Scarlet Tribute, was a multiple stakes-placed winner and earner of $194,910.
“She’s a real efficient filly in her stride,” Brinkman said of Joe G’s Payback. “She’s got her dad’s speed, and her mom was a really tough little mare.”
Brinkman trained Scarlet Tribute for P. Dale Ladner, who co-bred and co-owns Joe G’s Payback. The filly also races for Scott Creel. Gerard Melancon has been aboard Joe G’s Payback for both of her starts and retains the mount.
Schiff’s Corner won her only start by 7 3/4 lengths May 31 at Evangeline. She earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 51, the best number in Friday’s field and one point higher than what Joe G’s Payback got last out.
Ashley Broussard has the mount from post 4 on Schiff’s Corner, a daughter of Songandaprayer. Ricky Courville trains Schiff’s Corner for Leslie Schiff.
Todayisnottheday is another debut winner in the field, with her two-length win over maiden special weights coming over Louisiana-breds on May 25 at Evangeline. She was flattered when the second- and seventh-place finishers from that race came back to win maiden special weights: Joe G’s Payback at Evangeline and Hot Pajamas at Louisiana Downs.
